Hi all. Ive posted a similar post on here before and I was reading alot of different post on here about used trucks if starting your own authority. My question to all. Is it really a good idea for such as a first time owner op like me to do so or should i purchase a new truck.

I ask because a friend of mine who teams has his own truck currently with panther and is under a lease. He has always suggested too me to get a new truck if i start. Reason is his saying "convience outweighs the cost". Im only 24 with no kids and live and help out with bills at my grandparents house. However with the plan i currently have now i dont think a new truck is in the books for me due to the high cost for one.

Currently i have 25k saved in the bank for maintenance tires hotel and fees to drive to orientation. I have a appt with wells fargo this weekend too see if i can open a line credit with them. I have a outstanding account as my car is financed with them. I never missed a payment never have been late and my credit score has built up to the upper 600s from that. I am currently unsure how much i would be able too receive however im guessing of a estimate of 75-100k.

Im still working out the cost which eventually ill know for sure what that numbers will be after i have an idea how much per month i would have too spend with wells fargo as well as other factors. I plan on doing OTR all 48 states and so far this is what im estimating so far.

    Truck Payment 1700/month 425/week
    Maintenance Escrow 1296/month 324/week
    Personal bills 950/month 237/week
    Insurance??
    Base plates and permits??
    Taxes??

    Total
990 (rounded number) per week in expenses
    4000/month

Again some of the numbers I'm still trying to solve which is why i have question marks on insurance plates and permits as well as taxes. Currently my plan in terms of how i will run is too most likely stay with the company i am with or move or to Schneider choice board so I will be running under a company and most likely running all 48 (except for cali if i get a glider).

I was looking recently at a 2014 Cascadia DD15 with a 10spd Low mileage 16000k. Previously in a wreck salvaged and rebuilt. It did however shy me away from it do to the few months remaining of factory warranty.
So really my question. Is buying a used truck worth it.

Not so well when it comes to diesel mechanics. I am able to diagnose a few electrical fuses replace wiper blades and check and fill fluids. Anything else major like replacing a water pump or air compressor is something i wouldnt know where to begin.

Fuel cost i forgot too mention would be $700-1000per week depending on on MPG load weight and terrain so an total is 1700-2000 per week. Sorry forgot too add it in.

At 24 you have it made! Side question, do you have at least 2 years exp?
I went the route of old truck. To some it may be extinct since production was ceased in 2007. Are you a quick learner or knowledgeable enough to figure something out? The closest I got to a new truck was looking at a glider. I didn't want that loan held over me. So decided to keep making my truck new.
That's good you have 25k saved. Doing better than most. In the current state of the industry, I would either stay company longer or lease to a carrier, eventually getting your own authority if you chose to.
I would go for a pre 2000 with an N14 Cummins motor, but that's me. The ones that are struggling now will be selling in months. A low cash offer may get you the deal of a lifetime! (Did this with 2 of our trailers... cash will really persuade someone).

I have been driving for 2 years and 7 months. I will say that im only starting to figure this out now that way i wont be rushing myself. I did plan on buying a truck this summer but i figured i might wait it out till the end of the year to buy at least ill hopefully have 30-35k saved up instead. Also will be able to finish with a W-2. Im not so sure how it would be doing both a W-2 and a 1099 next year. I was also looking at a glider from fitzgerald but they want alot for the truck. I wouldnt be so sure if the loan would cover it.

A freightliner columbia with a Pre emission detroit 10spd would run me 113k. Idk if wells fargo is gonna lend me that much.

Schneider actually has used Columbia gliders for sale... Think most are 40-50k. Put 10-15k down, finance the rest, pay it off in 12-18 months, keep detailed records of your accounts and business plan. Then if you choose to go new you'll have the business experience and be able to dealer finance, even if you want a brand new glider. Or if you have 25k on hand, you could lease brand new from a company and have a strong enough reserve to weather an entire year of bad freight.

Wreck Salvage? WHOA. There is a shop in our county seat that tries to rebuild rolled over, wrecked tractors and some of those seem a total loss as far as Im concerned.

Why am I writing here? I purchased on paper a 1995 Freightliner for 41,000 dollars with intent to hire on and get rolling. Your numbers as far as payments, maintenance fund hold back and so forth are pretty good. I expected to have that tractor paid for in 4 years free and clear and keep going possibly to become a fleet with more tractors. The worse problem with that tractor was a previous front end issue when it went out of alignment once or twice compared to the previous shop records kept on it. It did well when I took it out to drive and hunt for fuel for it.

Fast forward to today, I would like to build a fleet but not with trucks with a history of wrecked or salvage.

You want to consider the engine, horses, torque, driveshaft, tires, gear ratio, transmission, where you are going to be working in the USA, terrain, weather, type of haul, idling, Generator installation and on and on and on.

If you like the tractor and the people will get you loads to haul at a money income sufficient to cover your nut and maybe give you a few extra dollars each month profit then you are golden. No complaints eh?

It's a serious step to purchase a truck. And something I think to celebrate as well. Not everyone can get to buy a truck and go into business hauling the United States.

    Then buy a New truck.
Go to a dealer and Ask what they can offer you.

Dude, before you do anything. Get it together on how to buy a truck.

IT IS NOT LIKE BUYING A CAR!

There are steps you need to follow that have been talked about before many times. It makes no sense at all when people want to enter into this as a business to just go and buy a truck then expect it to last more than 100000 miles. But people do it all the time and many times end up with marginal junk on the road.
