Like the title says I'm a newbie. I have a job offer pulling around oxygen tankers and was just curious if weather or not starting off local is a mistake for a newbie or would you jump on the opportunity?

Lots of skilled drivers would KILL for a chance to pull hazmat tankers of Oxy, locally.

Frankly, however, I would find it highly suspicious that any company would hire a greenhorn to pull hazmat tankers, on a local route.

Something really doesn't seem right with this at all, IMO.

This is a very reputable company and I actually asked the guy interviewing me why they were looking at new drivers. He simply said because he wants to train them the way they want us to be at the company. They usually require two or more years of experience but a few opens came available so he was looking for new guys straight out of school. I guess he did the same thing a year or two ago and was happy with the results. Me and another guy from my school jumped on this opportunity as soon as we heard.

I just wasn't too sure if it was a good idea on my part or not to start off local, I plan on staying local til my kids out of the house and my wife's sick of me.

Funny thing is after you start the local gig you'll find that your more than likely making more money than a otr driver,...

And you go home after work,............

Take the local job, keep your nose clean and stick with it!!

I would sure jump at that opportunity if it came knocking on my door. Lets face it, your wife is probably already sick of you but just hasent mentioned it, so until she does you might as well hang around. Like others have mentioned, home every night, probably more money than OTR, shorter hours. My guess is they probably have a low turnover? I think working for a manufacture or supplier of their own product is better than working for your standard trucking company. You might want to get yourself a Thomas Guide for the areas you will be driving in up there. Your employer probably has directions to all their customers but a map book sure comes in handy. Best of luck.

Jump on the local gig and don't worry about going OTR! It's hard to go OTR after driving local, but if ya can get a local gig, why would you want to go OTR?

Not trying to hijack your thread, but I also have a local job opportunity right out of school. I'll be pulling dry van around Michigan and over to Canada and maybe to Indiana once in a while. Who would've thought a person could get a local job right out of school. A while back I read one of Chompi's posts and he was advising newbies to look at other carriers besides the large ones, so I gave it a try, and it worked. I guess you just don't know unless you try. I should be starting right after the holidays, meanwhile I've been running a dedicated route with a trainer the last couple of weeks. Hope it all works out.
Thanks for the heads up CHOMPI:biggrin_25525:

As far as I've been able to tell, the biggest issue you'll face if you go right to local work is having to put up with a lot of OTR guys on internet forums who will claim that because you've never gone OTR, you're not really a truck driver. I believe they do this because it is their intention to make you feel inferior and some amount of sadness. And if you're anything like me, you will find a way to get over those feelings of sadness and inferiority in about 3-1/2 seconds give or take 3 seconds.

It sounds like a terrific opportunity. You would be a fool not to jump on it.
