With the months of training I'm going to have to do I'm actually not that worried about it. From what the guy at the company said it's a month in the classroom and in the yard then two months out on the road with another guy at the company shadowing him. I figure after three months if I'm still dangerous this company isn't going to let me go. They're very safety oriented such as wearing all your safety gear and stuff. Only bad part is, one time screwing the pooch and your out on your rump

Ignore 'em. It's not so much the local aspect of your job which makes it so good, it's the fact that you are hauling your own product. Your truck doesn't need to make a red cent, because the load is paying your wages. I've been OTR and I wouldn't swap what I have now for anything. Read the forum by all means so that when things get you down you realize just how lucky you are compared to other drivers. Well done and welcome to the industry.

Militrucker, good luck, i hope you get the job. you will find that local/daycab is the only way to go. OTR is a lifestyle change and not the best. as far as Hazmat, drivers seem to exaggerate the Hazmat issue. its nothing that anyone cant do! the training you need will be given plus annual/bi-annual training for the job. being on a reg. local route allows you to be on a first name basis with customers. just be glad your not pulling a van with LTL and 3-4 different hazmats inside with multiple placards sticking out like a sore thumb. Enjoy.

    militrucker Thanks this.

Thanks for the luck cuz I'm gonna need it. As far as the training goes your right about the amount I'll be getting. Every week the company has a hour of training on different subjects. I'm hoping this does work out but I'm starting to get nervous that i'm not going to get it. I know there's going to be some experienced guys I'm competing with but who knows. Last night I went ahead and filled out a app with WSE, but I'm really hoping for this local job. The simple fact is local pays way better and is a steeady pay check.

Pays my bills. All the OTR guys that can drive from California to,,,, Allentown, PA. Then little ol' me will run it right down to Wall Street while the crybabys ride off into the sunset.

Anyway, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say part of the reason this guy's getting the bennifit of the doubt from his new employer might have to do with the Beige HMMV in his pic. I'm sure he's dealt with things that go boom before.
