I agree almost every job listing is asking for 6 months experience for it to be relevant, although I have seen a few that just require some experience. If the economy starts booming again I would expect the requirements to be lowered as driver demand picks up. But hey I feel like I learned 80% of flat bedding and the other 20% would take years. I’m ok with this being my last flat bed job. It’s really not worth the supposed more money. The job ain’t bad for me, but my gripe, impossible to stay clean. Which might not be a big deal if I was home more but out for 3 weeks minimum and not nearly enough miles to earn shower power. It sucks always being being dirty.
don’t think I heard back from melton or maverick but I guess it would not hurt to give them another app
Is it reasonable to ask for 6 weeks off?

@Chi Town Steers
IMHO go tankers with SNI. Or prime, which is food grade iirc. But having a hazmat is a bonus. Proves your not a felon. ECT ... It's separates you from a bunch of other CDLs.
Did jb Hunt offer you a job?Chi Town Steers Thanks this. -
jb hunt wanted me to call back the week I hit 90 days, otherwise I’d have to go with a trainer again, but they said they would offer a job.
why do you say go tankers over the GD reefer?77fib77 Thanks this. -
@77fib77 They always have tanker jobs available in my area, I was thinking about it. One of them requires haz to start plus 3 months and the other is any CDL.

The tanker job pays about 18 an hour GD pays about 2377fib77 Thanks this. -
Tanker work is the way to go. DG is mega carrier nonsense that won’t lead anywhere. Hazmat tanker work can lead you to all sorts of lines of work. Hauling fuel in the PNW you can easily make $140k + a year. You’ll never come close to that with anything from a mega. And it’s simply work vs DG
77fib77, gentleroger, rollin coal and 1 other person Thank this. -
I'm guessing your time at WE has not included any:
- gooseneck
- lowboy
- stepdeck
- oversized/heavy haul/multi-axle
- specialized (e.g., glass)
- marine/watercraft
- special vehicles (ATVs, golf carts)
80%? I should think not....
Heck...the best part(s) of flatbedding (& usually the most lucrative) don't involve tarping.
But to get to that side of flatbedding....again....you'd need more than 3 -- 6 months of "normal" flatbed duty (regardless of whether or not the job market later bounces back).
-- Lgentleroger, Rugerfan and Chi Town Steers Thank this. -

The DG/DT job may pay more than the tanker duty, because of:
- You will basically rewrite the laws of physics to park/back up in some areas -- without hitting other vehicles/fixed objects (the job is high risk)
- The incredible hassles/aggravation involved with unloading the trailer (with little/no help from store staff -- & in all weather conditions)

you said I cost everyone money because I’m a bad driver. You also said nobody cares that I’m a veteran of the military.
You know what nobody cares what you have to say.
