Is it supposed to be this awful buying a truck?

Small update, the owner of the dealer in Texas called me this morning. The sales rep that "sold" me the truck sold it to someone else because they offered $500 over the asking price to get the identical pair of trucks, and the sales rep gets 50% of any amount over the asking price on top of their regular commission. They also have a standing policy of returning 50% of a deposit if they held a truck for someone that did come and look at it, but didn't want to buy it, so that's what the person had offered me yesterday.
The owner said he'll mail me a check for the deposit and my airfare. I'm still not entirely whole with that, and certainly not happy with the situation, but c'est la vie. Not worth going legal for this one.
Got burned so a salesman could pad his paycheck with an extra $250.
Still going after the Utah dealer though.

I have not look into Mack's, I knew they were related to Volvo, but didn't know they have identical equipment. I'll definitely look into it more.

@BobO1176 I could be interested...but only if the price was really good. Would have to at least make up for the difference in weight (weight sensitive industry and US weight laws...but half the time I'm empty), tolls, tire wear, and fuel burn...plus you said you think it's a lemon. Not sure this is the best forum to advertise it with that disclaimer.
More curiosity than serious interest, but do you happen to know what the weight of that tractor is full of fluids and ready to drive. (No tools, removable accessories, etc)

@Ridgeline I absolutely should have done that. I was hoping to deal with them directly, but doing so certainly bit me. I would have with the Texas dealer, but they now at least said they are going to make it (mostly) right.
I'm holding off on complaints to regulatory officials until after the lawsuit is finalized, but will do that once it's done.

Thanks for those recommendations, I'll reach out to all of them to see if they have something that may work for me.

@Brandonpdx I had not really thought anything substantial about it. Realistically speaking, everything they own is likely under a floor plan, many floor plans have bad finance terms (10%+ interest) so cycling inventory through fast is the name of the game. Assuming they actually adhered to the contract, and gave me 60 days, that's 2 months of them paying interest on an expensive asset that also ties up their line of credit. If they are working at the limit of their comfortable financial exposure rather than their ability to obtain inventory, that would create a large opportunity cost for them as they wouldn't be able to buy another unit without the guaranteed sale. $5,000 would certainly be profitable, but it seemed reasonable, at least at the time.
Generally, when people are doing what they are supposed to, the deposit goes toward the principal of the purchase, whether it's $1, or $5,000, as long as you do purchase the item in the end, it shouldn't matter.

I know you are still irked about the whole situation, however that sounds reasonable to me. I am not sure how many people would even do that much for you, honestly, freely of their own accord.

Overall it sounds to me like it's still a seller's market for trucks. At least in this little niche, anyway.

Best of luck and keep us posted.

I’ll never understand why people go thousands of miles to find a used truck.
Unless you need a very special type truck there are plenty within a few hundred miles,
Most dealerships use a detailing company to make them look good and have no idea of the condition of drive train.
Odds of getting a good one are about the same anywhere.

He said he had special specs and they are not everywhere. Hint the reason he traveled across the states to go see them.

Lot of effort to haul a hundred or so gallons extra…..

plus that lift axle will kill you if you run into any snow. A nice mack with mdrive 6X4 would do the trick……

    P.S. get a blackmear

Call HR Ewell and ask if they have any used trucks for sale, they pretty much run the specs you’re looking for.
