I think you're right, but only for the >400 mile time sensitive runs. Should the 8 hour restriction be enacted, we'd probably just see freight being delivered more slowly (2 days vs. 1 day), and rates increase slightly to compensate - but the net would be reduced rates, since I doubt that the rates would double.

Running northeast, I've largely been able to keep driving time under 8 hours per day and still generate about $4k / week revenue to the truck.

That being said, I don't want to see that restriction enacted.

Was he in a daycab? If so, then that's understandable. If he had a sleeper, then he could have jumped in back and logged sleeper time.

Tanker? Waiting in line? If he has to watch valves or what not than he can't be off duty.

Its not like every truck is going to be stopped at the same time taking their break. I don't think its going to change much, I see guys stopped everyday for 30 mins or more now as it is. Now the 34 hr restart crap is going to screw over some drivers. especially those that run nights.

roadmedic----he just told me about his citation. so i would assume it was just recently.

windsmith--all there trucks have sleepers. it's still not allowed.
in utah. i don't think i've seen ANYONE actually using daycabs for hauling oil.

last1--they wait in line of usually 2 hours. plus 1 hour to unload. there's a ton of trucks hauling oil so there's no immediatly unloading.
the problem is that there scale in and out is time stamped. which is usually around 3 hours. i know we truckers have situations like that sometimes. so we truckers can't technically claim offduty. so if you reefer drivers get time stamped 10 hours apart at shipper or receiver. your screwed for off duty. technically speaking.

    something to be careful about.

i don't know why the scale asked for his weight tickets. unless it's stamped as part of the bol's.

last1--not every truck is going to be stopped at the same time. but we already have problems finding places to park as it is. with the current rules. imagine what it's going to be like next year when there's a mandatory break. and the 34 that can easily be turned into 52 hours. add to that, that most likely drivers will start driving less hours in a day. in an effort to avoid that 34. save there hours so they can recap. which means trucks are going to be parked longer. driving 9 hours a day instead of 11. using that required break giving them actually 8 1/2 hours. so that they never run out of hours.

you know. i can actually see driving makng this 8 1/2 hours a day thing happening. totalling 68 hours in 8 days.

then i can see the govt actually issueing new rules. limiting us to 8 hours a day. and eliminating the 34.

Under consideration is a new rule to allow driving as many hours as you want but you have to take a 34 every other day.
