Yup MA takes the cake for hardest state to get your CDL in.

Ohio and NY are the most anti-truck states. Cali is a breeze in my opinion. NY because of the nightmare they call NYC and no idling BS. At least in Cali it's usually warm enough that you don't need to idle.

Are you familiar if you have an out of state CDL and move to California if you need to take the written and road test to get a CA CDL?

I moved from AR to MA before the CDL . I had been driving OTR with an AR chauffeur's license . MA required Class 1 to drive semi and told me I would have to take a road test . I asked if I had been stopped delivering a load from AR to MA if my chauffeur's license would have been valid to drive . They said yes .
My employer asked if I had friends or family in RI . MA accepted the RI Class 3 for a MA Class 1 and RI would accept the chauffeur's license without a road test . I used a family member's address , got a RI Class 3 and transferred it to a MA Class 1 a couple of months later .
MA has always sucked as a place to live . When they were rationing gas in the 70's and if you needed gas for a lawnmower you had to bring it to the gas station and wait in line my friends in AR were burning 50 gallons of gas a weekend running boats on lakes .

    Still a #####. 9 out of 10 fail first test, 8 out of 10 2nd.
I passed my operators in 2002 1st shot, my CDL b in 2010 first shot, and cdl a in 2015 1st shot.

You are not kidding! This is going to sound like I'm whining, but oh well. I'm at a school right now for 6 weeks in MA. I already have my CDLClass B license and have decided to go for my Class A. When I tested for my Class B before I got into coach buses, I found it easy. Now, 15 years later, perhaps the rules and regulations for testing Class A drivers has gotten that much stricter. We were told today in class that on average, of a class of 10 for example, only HALF will only pass their CDL Class A tesr the very first time. Half. All I keep hearing is "don't do this, you will fail" or "do that, or you will fail", or "don't point this out or say this to the trooper", or else guess what? Yep, you guessed it! You. Will. Fail. Massachusetts must be the hardest state to obtain a Class A license in the entire country. I am thoroughly convinced of that now. Maybe for the Class B license, it is or was relatively less difficult back when, but it has been made very clear to me that getting my Class A, even going through a CDL school, is NOT going to be a walk in the park. And the troopers are going to make sure of that as well. So, while I am not one who likes to take the easy way out of things, or to take any shortcuts, due to this early frustration, I am wondering myself if it is just better to test in another New England state like Maine, Vermont or New Hampshire so that I am not completely demoralized even before the test begins. I am in my 4th day of training and I am pretty much just that: demoralized. So, if you have any little bit of confidence going into a private school, do not worry, because rather than build your confidence from the beginning in order to help you pass the test, they will zap that from you right from the start to begin with.

Oh, and to top that rant off, I don't know how to shift a manual transmission. Never have. In my life. As in 37 years of life. Tried for the first time today. Demoralized is the correct word.

Na guy. You got your b license. As long as you can demonstrate certain things, most troopers will give you a break.
My CDL test was done in 40 minutes and that included maneuvers and road test
