I am a refr driver in the midwest for only two years. The long time drivers say January and February are slow times. But I did not have any days off those months in my years.

Yes people must eat but that is a foolish reason to decide to pull a reefer. If the economy is so bad that vans are sitting due to no freight then the luxury of frozen food is moot. People will be eating dry survival food. I've pulled both and there is no difference in productivity. It all depends on the company and their ability to utilize their resources.

also want to add that some of the most horrible experiences I've ever encountered while picking up and/or delivering have been dry van loads.

yup, sat 14 hrs at a brewery waiting on the beer to finish being brewed. never sat that long in flatbed except 1 couldnt deliver load because prison was in lock down, but got paid to sit plus paid hotel and food, so depends se mostly lumber and some steel, midwest steel and some lumber or machinery depends on how adventurous you are depends on what you might want to do i have never done refer, but loved flatbedding getting tired of tarps however so i think it is time to try something new, alot of flat bedding will be outside work delivery to freight yards, ports, construction sites, while refer i believe will be distribution center to stores or vise versa like I said if you like adventure flatbedding is definitely it

Two things I've always figured never slow down are hauling trash and hauling milk. Cows have to be milked everyday and there's always trash.

Thank God trash hauling from Toronto to MI slowed down . That was a bunch of reckless drivers in junk trucks clogging up the customs lines . I had a bearded turbaned driver pass me in the low speed lanes approaching Port Huron . Then his truck died at the customs booth with 2 more trash haulers waiting behind him and he couldn't get it restarted . :biggrin_2559:
Almost every sector of the industry has slow periods , especially in the 4th quarter . Tanker stays pretty steady with the right contracts because customers have limited storage capacity and many plants run 24/7 . I know ag hauler hopper bottoms that run regional . Drivers get home every weekend and make $45,000 +

I appreciate all of the good advise. I realize that everything has its ups and downs. Leaning towards flat bed with Swift. I have heard good and bad about them just like everywhere. Seems like a good place to start. At least I have been practicing being broke as a painter for the last couple of years lol. So at least the low pay as a newbie part of the transition won't be a shock to the system.
