Is Trucking for me? What are the hours really like?

I'm looking for a new career. Trying to get some idea what this one is actually like. One group of people tells me it's amazing. See the country, make great pay, work your own hours. The other group tells me if I want to make any money at all I'll be driving all day and night with no regular sleep and no time to so much as stretch my legs.

Is it possible to do this job with semi-regular hours? I can't handle working nights on the regular. I could probably pull the occasional night run, but I just can't do it consistently and still drive safely. Does that mean this isn't the career for me?

Also, I don't mind being on the road for 3-4 weeks or more. I'm totally fine with that. But I need a full night's sleep and a little time to unwind and exercise. One guy's telling me that he works 9-4 and he spends his nights playing Xbox or dancing at the clubs. Another guy tells me he doesn't do anything but drive and then park his butt at rest stops.

What's it really like? What's a week in your shoes? Do you get time to watch TV, read a book, take a jog? Do you get regular sleep? Or are you stressed out and exhausted all the time?

Legally up to 14 hours workdays. If you want to make money then you will need to run whenever to stay on loads. Seriously if you have to ask then look other places. It is more than a career change.

If you want regular hours get a job running a flat or step deck. 99 percent of those loads the shippers and recievers are only open 7 to 4.

Your not a paid tourist ..... You will have to drive at night.

If you have hours available you will be expected to get going.......any time day or night.

And you dm will be watching by satellite . They'll know everything you do......

Rarely stressed out or exhausted. I do get regular sleep. I'm home for a reset each week and work hard while out. Usually a little reading or net surfing but other than that it's work and sleep.

Now if you're out for weeks at a time and don't reset you can only work an average of less than 9 hours a day so time for exercise, tv etc is there.

There's a whole lot of different trucking jobs though. Most require more hours than your standard 9 to 5 job but few will leave you exhausted and stressed unless you let them.

See the Country, make great pay and work your own hours would be a rare combination.
