I have spent about 4 years away from trucking, after about 15 years of experience, mostly flatbed, but also heavy haul, tow truck, water truck, etc.
My record is clean and dry, and I have all my endorsements.
I thought a local Flatbed carrier in town was going to accept me, and I have met a lot of people and started orientation, and then they remembered to run me with the insurance company...
So after waiting 6 weeks, I find out they need at least 2 years current experience lol
So now I have to choose the next best option.
I know Swift will take me (Snort... I have a license and am breathing), and Heartland has nearby terminals and sounds decent on paper, and talking to the recruiter they sound like they will take me.
Are there any other training carriers that hire over here?
I would love flatbed, but can handle dry van if I have to. Lol
Among the ones over here, which is the best/worst?
The recruiter told me Heartland has either Cascadias with apu and 1800 watt inverter standard, or Prostars with Optidle and an inverter.
Being able to have a microwave is pretty important for me, and I think I heard that Swift doesn't do inverters.
So what do you guys say?
@Chinatown, do you know much about this side of the country?
I live in Yreka, about half an hour south of the Oregon line, and within sight of i5.
Thanks!
Ben

You might try some of the outfits that advertise in the Yuba/Sutter Craigslist. They're mostly I-5 corridor produce outfits and they're usually run by East Indians. It's not the best deal in the world but it might be a place to get started again.

Check with A&M Transport (flatbed) and also Jones Bros. Trucking.
Jones Bros. has their own cdl school, so they might have some refresher for something for you.
KKW Trucking is dry van and all they want is for you to have a cdl. They don't care about your experience or even if you don't have any experience as long as you have a CDL-A.
May Trucking probably will hire you, but it's reefer.
Western Express will hire you for refresher and they're flatbed.
Leavitt's Freight Service is worth a phone call.
That's all I can think of right now.Ke6gwf Thanks this. -

I will call Jones and Leavitts tomorrow, see if I should bother putting an app in.
And I will save May and KKW as second string options.
You really are an amazing resource Chinatown! ThanksChinatown Thanks this. -
OK, Scooter, saw your old post from 2013. Lumber, beer, wine, loads and need 2 yrs. experience. -
They have curtain & dry vans. The 2 year requirement like at a lot of places is a judgment call.
The OP will do well to take a refresher course at a certified trucking school.
That will help to mitigate some of the push back he might experience with some of the companies who require a 1 or 2 year recent driving experience.Chinatown Thanks this. -
Lol, well, that was unexpected!
Western Express won't even hire me....
I guess they can't hire Refresher drivers out of California, something about California law not allowing the contract they make refresher drivers sign.
(not sure if this law is a good thing or not... Lol)
I called Leavitts, and at first the recruiter said no, with no current experience, so I asked how long should I work at Swift or whatever before I applied, and so they asked someone else, and when they heard my experience level, they said go ahead and apply. So I have some hope there, and it seems to be a company with a wide range of trailers, so I could start out with basic flatbed stuff, and then work up into their way oversize loads.
And while I hear you Scooter, between needing income soon before my savings run out, and not liking the idea of spending money to have someone "teach" me something I already know, I would rather find someone who will take a risk on me, or go with Swift or the like and build actual experience, while making money. -
WE and a bunch of the others have non-compete clauses in their contracts. In California they cannot enforce a non-compete, the courts figured out non-compete means you can't be employed anymore doing what you are skilled and trained at, which equals unemployed. You need to think Apple and Google employees, they took both to court over it and won. Swift, Prime, and some of the others don't think anyone is smart enough to know, it is still in their contracts.

A refresher course is not a full fledged 4 week course. Sometimes it amounts to only a couple of days.
Call T&S on Monday and ask for Chris in recruiting. Tell him how much experience you have and see what they say.
One way or the other, something will work out for you.
