That's a bright blue carabiner, which is about the same size as the caltrop. Make it black, move it to the inside portion of the tire, and cut the ambient lighting and no driver is going to notice it. You'd have to get your head down to ground level, and no one is going to do that.

So the tires thump fine, but as the driver pulls forward he rolls over the caltrop and pop goes the tires.

If a tire is so low on air that it thuds when moving then it could have been caught very easily by a good pre-trip especially on the steer axle. Also, a good pre-trip involves getting down to ground level to check for leaking wheel seals, a quick look at the slacks and listen for air leaks etc etc

Ok, I figured out where you're getting lost.

The tire is at FULL PRESSURE during the pretrip. Absolutely nothing wrong with it. The caltrop is placed under the tire, probably with the upper prong in the tread. The only way it's going to be visible is if the driver puts his head down to ground level.

It isn't until the wheels start moving that the caltrop punctures the tire, which creates the thid noise.

Ok, that makes sense. Still doesn't excuse the poor pre-trip though. That requires actually getting down to ground level IMO. It's obvious the driver didn't do that.

    Do you?

do you actually get on the ground to do a Pretrip?

the driver did a post trip before the ten, then did a Pretrip before he moved, and still these were missed because they are hard to see.

I put a lot of trust in my drivers, they don’t miss much if anything on their pre-trips, if anything. If something is wrong, they know it will get fixed and that’s one reason why fleet wide down time is below 5%.

so back to the issue of the use of them, these are flat black, the do not reflect light and are very hard to see. I know that my neighbor used them in the military, they were painted green and tan to match the terrain and he said they were almost impossible to see on day light, why they are so effective in stopping a vehicle.

Not sure you really understand how close to contact point of the tire these things sit. For the average person to notice one and not think it’s more than a pepble you would need to lay on your belly and all but put your cheek on the ground while looking at each tire directly at the contact point.

The second thing to think about is if the person is that lazy to be parking and blocking fuel pumps you know they aren’t doing a reasonable pre trip! Just watch those type drivers, at best they do a quick walk around and barely even look at anything but they will tell you they did a Pretrip everytime.

Speaking about schools or training. When I used to do dock to driver training one way of getting rid of the undesirables was to pretend to have to do some last minute paperwork and run it to the front office.
I would say go do your pretrip and I will come out and meet you at the truck in a few minutes. Then after they headed towards the yard I would join the safety manager and watch the live video with him. It’s amazing how many would just go start the truck and sit inside filling out the paperwork without so much as even looking at the lights.
The look of dismay on thier face when I got out there and asked, Did you do your pretrip properly, were there any issues, concerns or questions? Followed by a confident No and handing me the filled out log. Followed by me stating “You are no longer in this training program, go see safety and HR they are waiting for you!” Was priceless!

    Dunno why you took offense.
And this ‘garbage human’ has personally seen C1 driving school trucks and others PARK beside the cat scales and all unload 3-5 people and go inside and eat vs their ‘trainer’ making them park.

And I used to give road tests and train drivers, for no extra pay.
I can see a worthless trainer without having to talk to him/her by their actions.
