Having had a beautiful 2021 389 and factory fresh Great Dane trailer stolen last November 2021 thought I would pass along some intel.
In talking with my salesman today about more thefts in Florida. He told me that they had a new dump truck stolen off the lot and a brand new day cab that they just leased to a company stolen. Both were caught on camera, both walked up, unlocked the door and drove off.
How they do it is simple. Just walk into the dealership with the last 6 of the vin and they’ll cut you a new key..no questions asked.
Who else has the last six of their vin plastered on the side of their truck?
Just a fwiw for Peterbilt owners. Remove your public Vin digets!

$200,000 trucks should have hidden tracking devices right off the line.
Siinman, LoneRanger, Rideandrepair and 2 others Thank this. -
Yah, they are in the ones with the navigation system like I have and had..Problem is that they hide them all in the same spot

Right behind the dash.
They are also using jamming devices so it’s kind of useless now with the available technology.Capacity, Siinman, Rideandrepair and 2 others Thank this. -
Interstate: Follows Federal Regulation Part 390.21. In addition, all power units must also display the last 8 digits of the vehicles VIN # on the passenger side of the power unit. The VIN marking must be visible from 50 feet away in a contrasting color to the cab.
Thank the law makers.ducnut, TheLoadOut and Concorde Thank this. -

The vin may have been a Colorado requirement, from years past. Just company and usdot# required now.
The last 6 or 8 is also on a little plate on back of sleeper or cab. It's maybe half inch tall and painted to match. Now that got me thinking, why would they put this identifier here? I would think at least some liability lies with whoever cut the keys without requiring registration and proof you are the owner. They made me bring that paperwork in even when I had the key in hand and just wanted some copies made.Siinman, Rideandrepair, ducnut and 2 others Thank this. -
I stopped putting the VIN on the outside when it was no longer a requirement. And I went around the CO scales 98% of the time already. Lol.
My guess in states where it’s easy to make trucks disappear they probably have someone at a dealer on their payroll who will cut keys for them without any proof of ownership. In any given area there’s probably not that many people involved but they can move a lot of trucks if they have access to keys.D.Tibbitt, Siinman, Rideandrepair and 1 other person Thank this. -
wow never knew that. Id never put my vin on side of my truck for all too see....very few have it now...

Wouldn't be the first stupid regulation I ignore, likely won't be the last either.RockinChair, D.Tibbitt, Siinman and 1 other person Thank this.

It’s not a regulation anymore, hasn’t been for a while.D.Tibbitt, Siinman, runningman0661 and 1 other person Thank this.

It’s not enforced, I don’t have my VIN displayed anywhere on my tractor, I’ve gone through three level 1 inspections, in three different states in the last 8 months, and not one DOT officer questioned me about not displaying a VIN #Siinman Thanks this.
