You mean like Volvo and freightliner pushing 2.64 gears with their 12 speeds, and a tag axle? A bunch of the concepts work , and have worked for decades.

Wondering about that myself, tag axles been around as long as I can remember on some applications. Can't remember the name to save my life but, anyone remember the tag axle setup that ran a wide heavy V-belt between the duals? Rear axle transferred power to the front axle by a belt, the pulley has built between the duals, can't remember the name of it. But it added traction without all the gears.

Many fall in line to slurp up the KR Koolaid!

There are many O/O with 1,2 or 3 emission trucks (and small fleets) that are doing very very well. I would love to hear their success stories instead of listening to the same KR rant on the evil emission engine. I dont blame KR. He has products to pimp and that is what he does best.

You can't ignore the fact that emission engines are not yet as reliable as the pre-'02 electronic engines. And what really sucks is that faults in the aftertreatment system will derate the engine even though there is no fault within the engine itself. The '14 ISX's are doing far better than '12 models (3 out of our 4 were inframed at less than 200K miles,) but the idea of keeping them around after warranty sends chills. Having a truck down for a couple weeks at time (which has happened) is a lot tougher on a small fleet than a big one.

The best of both worlds would a new-style motor, with the benefits of the more accurate injection system and the VGT, with the EGR and aftertreatment disabled/removed. Reprogram the injection timing to a more economy friendly setting, and redo the VGT settings to get the benefit of the the quicker spool-up and stronger jake performance, without the increased backpressure the EGR needs to work. But that's a way more complicated task than setting up a pre-egr motor, which are much more easily re-mapped for better performance and economy(fewer parameters to map.) Plus the pre-egr motor still looks original, something not as easily pulled off with the SCR systems. (Not to mention the soot covered exhaust is a dead giveaway that the emission system has been disabled.)

The problem with KR is he doesn't know enough himself to judge what he's being told about engines. So if the bug in his ear (I'm guessing Bruce,) is screaming "pre-EGR!", then of course, that's what he's going to push. And quite frankly, the problem isn't really KR, it is the Kool-aid drinkers who parrot his thinking over and over, where it's picked up by the unknowledgeable and soon it becomes "Everybody knows..."

Do I like the fact that KR is a paid shill? Naw. But it takes suckers for a shill to thrive.

Winn Dixie ran those on their trucks many many moons ago. I can't see any benefits to that system and lots of downside. Both axles are basicially locked together all the tiem, meaning more tire wear, more rolling resistance, especially with mis-matched tires, and less fuel mileage than a power divider syster, plus a belt to replace.
