I am considering Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids to get my CDL. I’m 54 and a Veteran, so my benefits would pay for the school. I am moving from the Seattle area to Iowa.

Would I be better off going to a dedicated CDL school or is the Community College a safe bet. I refuse to be milled out to be ground into hamburger, or hurried into learning things so I can make money.

Just some background... the move is for family and slower pace. I was a stay at home Dad and wife made a lot of money at Microsoft. I worked at Kenworth for ten years... and always wanted to drive. My wife needs a break... she’ll be with MIcrosoft in Iowa until I’m up and going driving.

We have money... I just want to get out there and do something I’ve always wanted to do. I’m also well aware of the pitfalls and crappy side of trucking...

Advice of any kind is appreciated.

Community college cdl program is a winner.
Get all the endorsements while there.
Will you live in or near Cedar Rapids?
What type trucking interests you; maybe we can give you some leads.

Liquid Trucking sometimes, on rare occasion, hires a new cdl school grad.
This is the only OTR company I know of that pays hourly pay vs. mileage.
Probably worth making contact when you have a school start date.
Opening page of the website has a "Chat Request" so you can talk directly to someone in the company.

If I could.... which I realize is a bit of a long shot, I prefer dry or reefer for a regional or maybe an outfit like Estes. I’m definitely going to get as many endorsements as I can.

We’re going to live in Cedar Rapids or Iowa City area. I grew up in Wisconsin, so I know the weather, the driving.

I’m willing to learn or do anything in the industry and take the time to do this. Our timeline is making the move next year in September... with me establishing a residency in Iowa soon and going there for the school next spring and then moving when the kids are out of school. My wife works remotely so she’ll be home with the kids until I’m established.

I’ll drive practically anything and would fast track this timeline if need be.

I'm sure several recruiters will visit that community college and some will probably have regional positions available for you.

I went through Kirkwood in 2011 via CRSTs two week program; 3rd generation driver but no verifiable and all had retired, they do a good job and with my experience it was pretty much useless for me lol but never the less no matter your knowledge or experience a refresher is never a bad thing.

When yall do move here I strongly encourage yall to live outside of Linn & Johnson county because it is cheaper the more rural you get and with it being only 30/45 mins to go from Benton to Jones county it wont add much to a commute. I'm always willing to help if you have any local Iowa trucking questions. I got lucky and found a 1 truck local operation.
