So you got $1200 after your carrier got their cut? LS guys usually end up with around 77-78% by the time the fuel surcharge, tarp fee, loading/unloading fees are broken out.

My point was that Landstar pays more to outside carriers than their own trucks.
Driver told me the $1400 included FSC.
I'm on a 80/20split.
No elog
$.15 - $.30 per gal off pump price fuel discount.
National account for tires and repairs.
All I pay is tag/reg and bobtail. Carrier pays everything else including IFTA.
Plus I can book loads from any source of my choosing,. to include direct/private deals.
Eventually I'll grow a pair and get my own authority.
Hurstsawmill, rabbiporkchop, Chasingthesky and 1 other person Thank this. -
You would be better off getting your authority that's for sure.
Hurst Thanks this. -
I may be overstepping here, as I am not yet an O/O, but I've read and understood enough to know that it's not how hard you work, but how smart you work.... Granted, you need both brains AND brawn.
blairandgretchen and KANSAS TRANSIT Thank this. -
I agree,.. and my wife has been pushing the issue for more than a yr now.
I am confident I could do better on my own. Its just that fear of taking your training wheels off. My carrier has been so good to me and has helped me every step of the way from company driver to O/O.
Its like moving out on your own from your parents for the first time. You know its going to happen eventually,.. its just getting the guts to finally do it.

I know all about that fear. Believe me.

The only question is, when you take everything into account, is grossing a little more on each load worth the extra workload. And be sure to include that there is freight they either won't, or contractually forbidden to broker out, and while most of that is just pretty good freight, some of it is very lucrative.Dominion Transportation and Hurst Thank this. -
I went through almost an identical curve, but our situations will be different - I guarantee it. I don't know yours. I'm with LS running a flat.
Hard numbers?
2015 - Grossed $186,000 on 110,000 miles - netted $79,000
2016 - Grossed $142,000 on 78,000 miles - netted $74,000.
The reasons for the above figures involve far too many variables, as you've already been told.
Old truck - paid for.
2 trailers, 1 paid for, 1 with a note.
The reason for O/O - ?
I LOVED our company job. Zero complaints. Would recommend it in a heartbeat. But I purely wanted to retire my wife, and be my own boss - because the money no longer mattered. And I needed a challenge, and was in a fairly strong, low debt position to do so. I DID NOT DO IT BECAUSE I HATED MY JOB, BOSS, OR DISPATCHER.
I hope you're absorbing all this knowledge, and not just relying on your confirmation bias to waste others time. So, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the above.Dirtymartini15x, ronslam, Khalid and 6 others Thank this. -
And - if it helps - 2016 all miles TTT - $1.81.
Fixed and variable costs at .87 cpm, in reality this year will be .63 cpm.
Yes - I can run cheap if I want - No, I won't - thanks.
The figures won't mean a lot till you analyze your own position, and jump in if the water looks OK.
