if a driver with their own authority is running late on a load due to weather, a breakdown , or terrible traffic. does the driver pay out a late fee? Does the broker try to cut the rate any?

it depends on the contract you have when you book the load, some brokers don't have a late fee but other do.

When I was brokering, I did it on a case by case basis. Late fees were written into the contract, but rarely enforced.

If you were late due to weather or highway shutdown for accidents or stuff like that, big deal. Act of God, crap happens, move on.

Flat tires or break downs....ok. Make it a habit, and our working relationship ends right quick. I can understand the occasional issue, but if it becomes a regular issue either your equipment isn't reliable enough for my business or you aren't. Same goes for illness.

Overslept? Decided to stay home an extra day? Went off to the casino? Hope you won big, buddy! Not only am I charging you the late fee (again, in the contract), but your name is mud as far as I'm concerned. And I'm telling EVERYBODY! Including the brokers and planners of all the carriers I worked with.

Drivers and carriers depended on my honesty and reliability. That relationship went both ways. I paid fair, I paid immediately upon receipt of signed paperwork, and I was upfront about what the load paid, what the fuel surcharge was, what the schedule for the load was, and what my cut was. Simple, clean, and honest. Screw me over, and I'll find another truck to haul my freight with a phone call.

Communication is key, most are used to dealing with problems, I’ve never been charged. And believe it or not whatever the problem, even if I overslept, I’m honest about it.No need to lie, they’ve heard all the bs stories before.

I have late fee on my rate cons but do t enforce them very often. In fact the other day s blown tire made the carrier late and the shipper wanted the product st their offsite location since it was late and they now couldn’t take it. I even paid a stop off but they did the best they could. I use it mainly as a way I can discount the rate if the customer is upset and me not lose money.

One of my trucks was fined $150 2 weeks ago for being late. The driver overslept two hours, we notified broker and shipper right away trying to be honest about it but still got fined. Wasn’t happy about it but crap happens.

    Rideandrepair Thanks this.
