Because I overthink stuff, and like having a backup plan for my backup plan...
I live in Michigan but I'll be attending Henderson's training in Caseyville, IL soon. Shortly after arriving, I'll have to get a Illinois learners permit (a Michigan one won't transfer).
It's my understanding that there is a limited number of attempts in Illinois to pass the actual CDL test. Three maybe, I think. Now, I'd be surprised it I didn't pass the first time, and would be absolutely shocked if I failed after all 3.
But.... If I do fail, is there any reason I can't come back to Michigan, rent a truck, and take the CDL test?
What sort of ramifications would this scenario have in getting hired on with another OTR company?
And I fully realize that if I can't pass after three attempts in Illinois, I might want to consider another line work.
Learner's Permit from 2 states?

1) Without a CDL you won't be able to rent a big truck (yeah, you can rent a box truck without a CDL); you have to test in the type of truck you hope to drive. You can't test in a box truck for a Class-A license.
2) Check with Michigan DMV. Check with Illinois DMV. See what Henderson's says, but only rely on the DMV answers.
3) Don't fail three times. Then find out how to transfer the Illinois CDL to Michigan.
4) Once you have the CDL from your home state and everything else works out for you, your (new) employer won't ask how many attempts it took you to pass the exam. -
BeanDip Thanks this.
