Leasing on vs. own authority

    Hi,

    I’ve been a company driver for several years and I got my CDL in 2000. I understand the basics of leasing on and having your own authority, but I was wondering if you could break down the pros and cons of both sides. It seems as though leasing on would be a good way to get your feet wet as an O/O instead of jumping in head first with your own authority.

    Someday I might cross over to that side of the trucking, but I’m just curious at this point.

    Although I don't utilize their services, you might check out ATBS website. They have quite a few topics available. Might also look at OOIDA resources as well.

    Like Scooter Jones said... check the OOIDA website. They have plenty to read and learn from. I leased on to a couple of different companies at the start. I would recommend doing the same, simply so that you have a safety net while learning the ropes. Best of luck to you.

    First and most important is insurance. I pay $200 a month for mine being leased on. 2nd is insurance I get around .50 cents off pump price. In the long run it will equal out if not better being leased on because insurance keeps going up.

    You put someone else’s name on the truck they get to call the shots with it, my money and my work went into building the truck and I’ll run it however I #### well please

    Lots of people say that. But even if you have your own authority and haul for direct customers or brokers. To some degree.... you still have somebody to answer to. That is if you want to keep those customers.

    for the work yes, customer service is a big part of the industry, I was referring to being on elogs, What freight to haul, where to buy their over priced Fuel, even with their joke of a discount, where to keep/spend MY money, not allowing pipes/visors etc On the truck, an all the other idiotic policy’s from someone who has never seen the inside of a truck
