Does anyone know of a good Carrier that an owner operator can lease onto. Power Only (or they provide the trailers) in Tampa Bay area. I've heard of FMX but they pay $1.00/mile, loaded & unloaded. I find it hard to even break even at that rate. I've also talked to Key Logistics in Aurbandale if anyone has experience with them, please let me know. Thanks to all who suggest something!

If you have no experience, nobody will hire you to lease on with them. Too many people think buying a truck is the fast route to getting to work, but it isn't. You still need experience.
There are some good companies to lease on to with experience, such as Landstar and Mercer, but you need several years experience and a safe driving record to get on with one of them. You need to keep in mind that they have a ton of legal liability if something were to happen and their name is on the truck along with yours. The liability reaches far past the insurance coverage limits, and the courts, and jurors look at trucks as blank checks when bad things happen. Thank God for the invention of reasonably priced dash cams. At least now we have a witness.
Good luck with your search. If you are a wannabe, I suggest you get at least two to three years experience before you even consider buying a truck.

My dad plans on running a small 3-5 truck fleet. Hes not really computer savvy as to join a forum and ask questions so its the reason i made this acct. He plans on getting freightliner trucks. Hiring drivers to drive and leasing them onto a carrier under there authority. Drivers are cdl a holders with no endorsements so probably want to stick with dryvan, reefer, maybe flatbed or even container if there rates are high enough:biggrin_25523:lol. BTW im just the son behind the laptop doing the writing i personally have no expierence as a driver, owner operator, fleet owner.

Yes more then likely There will be one! Ill get the "You have no experience, drive for 2-3 years as company driver, then save up millions to buy truck & trailer, then get authority, blah blah blah". I do however understand its in good nature because this is a tuff industry to just get into and expect to make $$$. Been reading this forum for awhile now and i see most post about a particular question get trashed with the "start from the bottom" talk.

No one is trashing due to start from the bottom, that is what each and every one of us does. The problem I and others see is this:

How many years experience does your father have OWNING and MANAGING trucks and DRIVERS? Please give me a solid number answer (I have an idea of what it will be, but I want to verify my suspicion).

How many MONTHS of working capitol does he have on hand? I don't care about the $$$ amount, but unless you have a minimum of 3 months ready to burn, don't proceed.

How much per mile does each truck have to earn in order to break even? I can tell you from my own personal experience as an O/O with a single truck and no drivers, the first 5-6 weeks of each quarter went to cover the FIXED expenses, Fuel, personal payroll, and Taxes took up the next 5. That left me with 2 weeks per quarter as actual profit.

Answer these honestly with actual numbers and we can discuss this further.
