I am not sure where I bigger carrier starts to be called big. But honestly I am seeing less and less of a difference between big or small. Except for the lack to keep you moving and the lack to offer any benefits to work at small companies.
Let's compare big carriers to small carriers.

So how does anyone figure if a carrier owns their trucks? And why?

I work for a company that has its own fleet of trucks that deliever our products. So far it's a better deal than any trucking company I've looked at located close to where I live. Our product is going to move every day. When my truck breaks down I'm driving a rental. Don't like driving a rental but I don't have lost income.
SingingWolf, G13Tomcat and magoo68 Thank this. -

If it will fit on a flatbed or step deck we will haul it. Our products first. Then something to get us back or get us up to lumber mills. I usually touch three loads a day.
Monday
1st load was a two drop load out of our plant to worthington mn
2nd load was grey block loaded in worthington to Harrisburg sd
3rd load was bagged rock from Sioux Falls to west Fargo.
4th load was a partial in frazee mn. Filled trailer at amish saw mill outside of bertha mn. Spent night in bertha.
Around 540 miles. Hustle all day. Chasing the big money. Not boring at all.SingingWolf Thanks this.
