Hello, everyone. After reading an article on an old KW with a shutdown timer, I was curious: Do you let your truck run for a bit at the end of the day? I’ve heard that’s it’s hard on the turbo to simply shut the truck off after you’ve been running for the day. I haven’t been able to quite corroborate this, so I thought I would ask the more experienced hands. Thanks in advance.![]()

Back when I first heard that it was “don’t shut down immediately after a hard pull”, but just moving around the yard at the end of the day shouldn’t have anything to do with that.

Is there a Pyrometer in the gauge cluster? We had timers & set it for 3 mins.

I would let it run for a few minutes to let the fluids stabilize if I had just had a hard pull. Otherwise, no.

I don't shut down until the pyrometer hits 300*. During the winter it's usually already there by the time I'm off the highway and backed into a spot. During the summer it can take 3-5 minutes after parking. I personally high idle with the fan on to get there because I hate low idling an engine, but low idling works just as well for the turbo.
The reason you need to do it is because if the turbo is 600+ degrees and you shut it down the oil left in the turbo is going to be super heated onto the turbo bearing surface which will lead to premature failure. -

Couple of minutes and shut it off. Once the pyro has dropped back.

I always idle for around 5 min after I park t9 let everything under the hood cool down and stabilize. It's better for the turbo and all the rubber hoses
