Is there a best region or state to live in to be a long haul trucker? A city where the most trucks have their loads either coming out of or passing through?
Basically, what I am getting at is, can a trucker live pretty much wherever he wants in the U.S. and be eligible for work and get home every 2-3 weeks? If I got on with a good company, I'd love to live in VT near Burlington or SC near Columbia. Also, possibly near Reno, NV. I am up for these places because I am single - no kids.

As a OTR you can live any where you want, The rub is where you live my limit who you can work for. Figure out who you want to work for and where they run. Then you can figure out where to live.

Most of the time it doesn't matter. There will be some companies that only run certain areas so yes it will matter then. If you don't care about being home more than every 2 or 3 weeks then you 'll be fine almost anywhere. find a company that you want to work for get hired and then figure out where you want to live.

I would say Vermont would limit you a bit. If you want to stay out 2-3 weeks at a time though you can live most anywhere. Think like a business. You want your business to operate in a most centralized location for your customer base. So, centralized to what you want to do. I live in Columbus, Ohio and we are within 600 miles of over 65% of the nations population. That's why we have a new rail hub with Norfolk Southern. That's why warehouses have popped up in the Rickenbacker tax free trade zone. most companies have terminals in or near Columbus. One of Swift's largest is on the west side for example. It's a good place to live and work in trucking. I would also say Oklahoma City would be a good centralized area. Of the three you listed I would say South Carolina would give you the most opportunity.

Of the choices you gave, South Carolina would be the best. Definately.
Vermont is an odd place to get time off because there are no real trucking routes near there except the little I-91 from southern Connecticut to Canada.
Out west really sucks. I know. Getting freight out there is easy, getting out from there is horrible. I live in the Florida panhandle. It's the same here. Ask anyone!!!Splenda Thanks this. -

Kansas City is not bad and a good place to live. You have I35 running north and south and I70 running east and west.

You want to live near interstates. South Carolina would be a good choice near I20 and I95.
