I got in this industry to be a trucker coast to coast border to border. You can say all you want about your specific job but the majority of local guys put in 10-14 hour days at all kinds of weird hours , all they have time to do is eat a hot Pocket and try to get 6 hours of sleep before reporting to work . Id go be an electrician if I wanted to stay at home, thousands of options that keep you home with 40 hours a week . Driving a truck isn't one of them.

i agree there are a lot of options for 40 hr work weeks. most won’t pay squat to an otherwise uneducated worker. even @ $25/hr that’s only ~$50k/yr. there is a lot to consider with a career. trucking offers A LOT of opportunity to earn good money with little to no education. i’d take a union skilled trades job @ $40/hr, but that is not something a person with indispensable responsibilities can up and do.

it is what you make it, the opportunity is there.

I can only speak for myself, but being home every night is necessary.
I have a farm, and lots of animals need to be fed morning and night , fresh water, and fences need to be checked.
I don't have the option to be away all week.
If I thought it prudent, I'd buy a cheap day cab and log trailer, and roll that way.
However, I recognize the need to gain experience before taking that path, so I'm better able to roll safely and smartly.

I can't speak for everyone, but I personally would prefer a home daily or even regional route compared to OTR at this point in my life, married with a bunch of young kids. A regular 9-5 doesn't pay the same unless you're highly skilled or educated in something.

OTR would have been fun at 21. Personally, I like the 5 days out, 2 days home or 4 days out, 3 days home routine.

6 months of OTR minimum will really help your close quarters maneuvering and backing skills. Lots of you local driving requires multiple stops, tight backing, city traffic, etc. You don't have time to take 15 minutes to back at each stop. I tried Local Beverage Delivery after being OTR for a year. I ####ing hated it. Left after 3 months and went back to OTR. Home daily sounds good until you realize you commute 40 minutes each direction, spend an average of 14 hours working. When you get home you eat, sleep, get up and do it again. Just a heads up, not as glamorous as it sounds. Good luck
