I've decided to go to work with my ma, @miss elvee and Mr E. From what I understand I need to get a year's worth of OTR experience before I can sign on with their outfit. I'm based out of arkansas in the russelville area, and I can get my CDL at the local college or go with a CDL mill at a company. Mr and Ms E have their own opinions about how to proceed, but I was suggested to come to the board here and talk with all of you guys - particularly @Chinatown - to get some input as well.
Thanks in advance,
~Riven

Trucking is a great career, as you already know!
The local college is best because it gives you more options as to companies to work for.
How old are you? Companies have minimum age requirements, but no maximum age restrictions.
Carter Express has school in Paragould I think; pretty sure they provide meals and lodging.miss elvee and Riven Thank this. -
Riven Thanks this.

Do you work for a reefer outfit or dry van?Riven Thanks this. -

Yeah, she's leaning toward the local college, but I want her to get both hands around her options.
Thanks for the help, China. -
Please do not indenture yourself as they used to do in colonial times into debt if possible in a mill. Go to the college maybe learn and get your CDL. That tuition I guess would have to be paid somehow. Maybe you can spend a year or less saving up for it cash? It's going to come out of you now or pound of flesh later understand?
Arkansas is not bad. But... erm you could get caught up into a outfit younder heah that might not be as... first class as they really need to be these days. I dont think you want that.
You also have a oppertunity. We used to interchange million dollar McKesson loads at your truckstop now and then serving teams who don't hae time to get to little rock and do a drop hook to get it.Riven and miss elvee Thank this. -
Crowder college in neosho is school of choice for CFI in Joplin... highly recommended by this highly respected driver

Thanks everyone for the responses, it's really been helpful!
So from what everyone is saying, the college seems to be the way to go, ideally? I learned only a little bit by osmosis from watching Ms and Mr E start their way up, but I remember them struggling their way by when they went through a company for their CDL.
It seems from what Elvee has been telling me that companies aren't really incentivized to actually help you with your entrance into the vocation. They get their money either way. If that's really the way of it and I'm ultimately the only one who cares if I get my CDL I may as well go it my own with the college route and cut the middleman.
@x1Heavy If I'm going the college route I think Petit Jean has a CDL course, I've done some poking around and I think I might be able to apply for a scholarship to help beat down the tuition, potentially making the course free. I hear ya about the backwards ways of AR, lol. Few years ago I had a guy marvel at me filling up my own car at the gas station or people noting that I'm still not married at the ripe old age of 27. With my sister getting married soon it looks like I'm the family spinster XDx1Heavy Thanks this.
