Honestly, I suggest you stay in school! Most carriers won't touch you, at your age.
One of the pitfalls of trucking, is that almost everything that is not controlled by the government, is controlled by insurance companies. And not too many insurance companies are going to even consider someone 19 years old. Not only that, but if my memory serves, I don't believe you can drive interstate, until you are at least 21. Although you might be able to drive intrastate.
From everything I can gather, both trucking companies and insurance companies would like to see drivers at least 23 to 25 years old.
Also, two moving violations against you could be a problem, depending on what they are. Keeping in mind that at 19 you haven't had the experience of years of driving.
Now, if you are determined to "go atruckin'" then your options are extremely limited at this point. Most likely driving for a construction/aggregate outfit. Again, your age is against you. But ya know what? THAT WILL CHANGE!:biggrin_2559::biggrin_25525:

I believe that we are going to be seeing some rather bizarre changes in trucking over the next few years. Whether they will be good, or bad, for the driver, has yet to be determined. I can't TELL you what to do, all I can do is make suggestions. And again, my suggestion is to stay in school at least for a few more years. I know that at 19, "a few more years," seems like a lifetime. (I was 19 too, it's just been so dog gone long ago, that it is hard to remember.):biggrin_2552:

Anyway, I suggest you go on with your accounting, if you are at all inclined that direction. BAs in accounting are finding all the jobs they want, for practically minimum wage, as clerks in an accounting outfit. (My wife recently retired from a long time career in accounting.)

Actually, 19 is a GREAT age to be! You (hopefully) don't have the responsibilities of a married man with kids, and your entire future is ahead of you.

Trucking is not the way it is seen on movies and tv, but if your uncle taught you to drive, I hope he also taught you enough to know that. And just knowing how to move a truck from point a to point b is not going to count for much with the trucking companies. Unless you have either a driving school, (very recent) behind you, or years of experience, you will be fighting an uphill battle.
    Good luck to you.

I thought you can't drive interstate until your at least 21. Like you can get a CDL at 18-19, but I think they slap a K2 restriction on it, meaning your stuck to intrastate hauls only.

That's correct on the age, you can be 18-20 but that's in state only. After that you can run interstate.

Getting $1,500 after tax a week is very doable running around 3,000 miles per week and a few drop and hooks. That is off starting pay with no raises, you top out after 3 years around .61 cpm.

    Mike2633 Thanks this.

Oh god! Could you imagine being stuck to intrastate in like Rhode island? That would suck so much.

ATA is begging Congress to start a pilot programme to let 18 year olds run interstate.
Regardless of outcome, no way in hell Big LTL will allow someone that young to run linehaul. Even self insured companies will gladly tell ya no. That's a fact.

If you wanna be gone for a year or more at a time, go join the Army. At least you will learn a useful skill so you won't end up like some of us here.

He would always sign on at 18 at a food service company, Sysco helpers average about 750$/week and they hire at 18. And Sysco will pay to send helpers to cdl school.

Perfect time to walk into the local UPS depot and take a temp job, see where it goes. Easier to get work with a degree, but not always more money.
