The "letter of the law" is that when traveling with an animal, it must be licensed or have a valid certificate of health. It's true, I didn't believe it at first either.

One of my guys has a Beagle the other has a big crazy Shepard. The Shepard could certainly use a dart sometimes!!NavigatorWife Thanks this. -
With a small dog always be ready to quickly pick it up in case another trucker's dog isn't on a leash.
I remember one time walking Abby and these stoner hippy types parked their car about 50 yards off and let their dog out. Dog spotted Abby and ran straight at her aggressively. They tangled for 3 seconds and Abby had the other dog pinned down by the throat and I got them separated and the hippies were yelling at me like it was my fault. I just held up the leash at them to demonstrate if their dog was leashed the whole thing never would have happened.NavigatorWife Thanks this. -

Yep. So... food, water with spill proof bowl, leash, poo baggies, shot records including a copy of your dog license. Toys, shampoo, a favorite blankie and my pitt Bloo gets a coat with reflective safety tape for the winter.
Bring a spare leash. Baby wipes for getting salt off his feet in the winter so his pads don't crack and bleed.
Other than that... enjoy!NavigatorWife Thanks this. -

Agreed on the salty sidewalks. There were times I had to pick Abby up (65 pounds) and carry her over salty areas. It is something that will break your heart to see a dog limping along with the salt chemicals sticking to their feet. I got the feeling it must feel like burning to them.
