Eh, I'd sit tight if I were you and find anything you can locally to pay the bills while these threats are occuring. Never heard of being gone for 6 months from initial hire, I've heard 6 and up to 8 weeks for training but never 6 months, which is what you're suggesting.
As other have stated, it can be difficult and at times impossible to get a job right out of cdl school that is local. I was able to do it, but I was in a position where I could, financially (rent free at the time.) I got lucky pretty much right out of cdl school, but I was beating the hell out of the bushes the entire time I was in private CDL school.
I would suggest finding out what a realistic commute is for you in terms of a local driving gig, then go to any and every place in all 4 directions and talk with them. See if any of them will sign you on if you got through private CDL school and train you. A good starting place would be food-service and LTL companies. If it's that important for you to be with your wife right now, especially at night, then you need to cross this OTR deal off the board for the time being, because you most certainly won't be home.
Looking for a way to stay together with my wife during CDL training

DOT Foods is likely hiring for dock in Modesto, good pay, a slight move, and they hire drivers as well.
LTL companies have dock jobs and some have dock to driver programs. Home every day, might work nights. There should be a lot of those companies nearby. See the LTL and local forum.Panamerican Thanks this. -
This is my first thought. I'll tell you why.
"Recieved threats on her life"
What in the world happened to escalate to that level. That tells me this area you live in is no longer a safe area. The threat levels are unreasonable.
You are not going to do 3 people in a truck. Period.
I trained my wife in less than 3 weeks in basic team reefer work. As long she drove forward and met her necessary objective (Usually a town assigned to her by a specific time 12 hours into the future, allowing 10 for her to drive it and take a stop or two by myself)
In about 9 weeks I had her trained and passed FFE's solo driving examination designed to determine if I am a good trainer (I would be fired from training any more students if that one failed)
You two, will go with seperate trainers. It will be for a while. Obviously you two will stay in contact, text messages etc.
The other part of the question relates to Passenger waiver. You generally have to put in some time. In my case it was usually a year before I earned the right to take anyone I choose with me, AFTER THAT PERSON signs a waiver on his or her life at the company headquarters.
YOU on the other hand already have police involved in your area. When their investigation is complete, they make a arrest you MUST REMAIN THERE at the disposal of the Court until this person is sentenced. Your wife is a States Evidence in this matter now. You two are not going anywhere any time soon.
I understand your are broke. But it is what it is. Sell the home. Rent a hotel long term or find a cheaper home outright and conserve the difference. Sometimes life requires you make these decisions. Your home is not everything. It can be lost very easy and this would be one situation it is. In fact again with the threats on your spouse's life you no longer have a home there. You live in a target that says "Here I am, come get me."Panamerican and rabbiporkchop Thank this. -
Save Mart Grocery Distribution Center in your general area has warehouse workers, trucks, and a shop.

Find a CDL program that you can attend while being home every day. The most cost effective programs are through community colleges. Doing that, you won't be tied to a company for a year or more, earning slave wages to pay back the inflated cost of their training program.

Was thinking on that "6 months" part.
That's probably how much experience they require before you are allowed a passenger. That was the "rule" with my first driving job back in the day.Panamerican and x1Heavy Thank this. -
If you are thinking about trucking with your wife, live in a small closet where you are inches away from each other in trying times while everyone is cussing both of you out giving you both stress. It is hard on marriages.

Hi there, everyone!
Wow, thank you all so much for even more awesome advice. It definitely sounds like getting paid training with one of these companies is not the way to go in our situation. We're starting to think at this point that taking out a loan and paying a private company or a college in the area is a much better idea based on your suggestions. I also heard today that there are companies that will rent trucks out and give a short amount of training and otherwise let you just pay for the truck by the hour to practice with on your own, and then you can take the CDL test. I guess I'd have to do a huge amount of studying and research and then learn more when I can get someone to hire me. I don't know whether that's actually true or a good idea, but I figure I may as well look into that as well.
Thank you also for the suggestions about specific companies who tend to hire right near where we live. I will absolutely be looking into those places!
I agree with the statement about this being a strong signal that the area where we're living is becoming excessively dangerous. We have already been noticing that, and this was just way over the top. I suppose that it's also true that if they make an arrest we might not be allowed to leave the area. Right now the situation is bad because we don't own our own home so there's nothing to sell to gain some funds that way -- we're actually in debt just trying to pay rent. That's the reason for the urgency in trying to open up this new avenue right now, because we're kind of tied down here right now for a variety of reasons.
As for the issue of living and working in such close quarters together for long periods of time under high stress, we do understand that. We actually have quite a bit of experience with similar situations in terms of being together 24 hours a day in extremely high stress and very cramped quarters. So we have an idea of the potential challenges, but think we might actually be unusually equipped to handle just that type of lifestyle.
Thank you all again for your help. We are very encouraged that there is a place like TheTruckersReport to ask about this and get the opinions of so many well-informed and experienced people. You guys rock.Last edited: Aug 22, 2018

Don't waste money on one of those short cdl training schools that lasts a few days. Probably won't find anyone that will hire you from a school like that. Those schools are ok for drivers that have some experience and just need refresher training so they can get back on the road.
California might pay for cdl school through various state programs such as WIOA Program. These programs are free to you and the schools they pay for are the good ones that are 160 hrs. or more.CJ701 Thanks this. -
While i do understand you predicament, its going to be tough squeezing in 3 people with only 2 bunks, then there's the issue with seat belts there's only 2 so legally speaking there should only be 2 people in the truck perhaps for the time being your best off not leaving home if you feel your wife is in danger. Like if you worked at the local bank could you have your wife with you all day? i've never seen it perhaps under these circumstances an arrangement could be made i'd have to see it to believe it though.
