You will hear people say oil leaks at cam followers which they will at some point and it's just labor and 3 dollars worth of gaskets. You will hear they eat injectors but with the right fuel filter and good fuel we have had very little issues. You will hear broken head bolts on the higher horsepower but we haven't had any break as of yet. Most the problems will be when the mileage starts to get up there or its abused.

Anybody you would recommend for ECM tuning on an '01 N14 ?

I had that diesel doctor in Mt. Vernon, IL fool with it, then went back and had him turn it down from his initial 600hp 'tune' 'flash' - whatever he did, I'm not thrilled. I drive it very light footed, just wanted a safe ECM tune that produced decent fuel economy and reasonable power.

Yes, just had cam followers done. And the front cover at the accessory drive I've heard as another 'issue'. Had mine replaced earlier this year.

Mine is an 01 also in a Volvo that was 425 hp when I purchased it

I just took it to my local Volvo dealer and they upped the horse power to 500 and torque to 1850

Just had to pay a one hour minimum labor charge to hook it up to the ECM

I would be surprised if it actually went that high of it was a 425 to start with. They may have put that file in the ecm but the injectors are different in those two settings. It will probably feel better driving but it's not at its potential. Also the injectors are trying to flow more than they can and they will be getting more pulse width than they can handle so it will cause a little more heat than it should in the cylinders. You may never have an issue but it all depends on the settings in the file they put in there for you.

Cummins n14 at 525 is a pretty darn good engine. We only have one at that hp and it does really well, out 550 cats can out pull it just a little bit but it's very reliable engine. There's not a lot out there for the n14 like there is for the cats. I can do a 600 2050 tune on them but haven't done any of mine cause it's not necessary and my trucks all have drivers in them.
