Well i got my cdl in early july and went with a company straight out of school. Didnt work out there and they found out i wanted to leave and terminated me. You may have read it in another thread by me but i wanted to start a fresh one just focusing on the best place to get my career going. So far i have had calls from Deboer, u.s. express, western express, p.t.l. , werner, and super service. Ive read alot of bad about them all but sometimes you gotta just deal with it when you make a bad choice. Something that could have me home each weekend is ideal but i know its not exactly a reality in this industry. Just really looking for a second chance in the industry and be able to make a decent living with a decent company. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated!! I still fall into the new driver category so i dont really have any experience besides the three week training i did with my previous company. Located in cincinnati ohio area.

Went through your older thread. I'm surprised at the situation. Can't believe other companies view you as unhireable. Check your DAC and make sure that company didn't put something on there to drag your name through the mud. I hear good and bad from Schneider, mostly good. All you really need is that first year somewhere, then this little speed bump you've created will be a distant memory. I'd scratch Western Xpress, Werner, and Swift off the top of the list and put them on the bottom. I hear more bad than good from those companies, granted the employee has a lot to do with that. I think Patty started at Werner and has great things to say about them. I'd try Schneider and Prime first if your going the mega route. Smaller companies may not want to take the risk of losing money as your previous employer had. BUT I'd still try everywhere that looked good.

You really have to set out a game plan. If you plan on becoming an owner op ASAP. Your first year doesn't matter. Just time to kill. If your looking for a company to call home then apply in person at all local places that look good. Rebuild your reputation and get a good paying gig after that first year.

Great lesson for those that haven't started out yet would be mike's previous thread. If the first place you went isn't working out. Stick with it until you have another job lined up. Even that might burn you. I've heard of people with another job lined up and falling through and your stuck out of work. Best move to make is to sit tight until that one year is in the bag.

Here's a link to the old thread to save anyone else from the anguish of searching for it. LOL

Alot of it had to do with how they found out and the money they lost on me. I should not have mentioned it on here before talking it over with the company first. Towards the end of ending orientation i was going to explain the situation but i shouldve done it as soon as i came in. I do have a couple options though that can get you home each week. DeBoer offered a regional run but at .27 cents a mile. Read alot about bad equipment though with them and they aren't a fan of toll roads but im not ruling anything out at this point. U.S. X. offered a couple different dollar tree and dollar general accounts. Ive watched them try to get into some of those stores here...looked like a real pain! Schneider offered me two options, one being wal-mart dedicated out of washington courthouse ohio and the other being regional out of columbus ohio. Both offered weekly hometime and ok starting pay. While making lunch i just got a call from cheeseman trucking but i doubt they will want me after i explain what happened at the last company. Thats usually when they drop the not hire-able bomb. Right now though im leaning towards the wal-mart dedicated, good hometime and i used to work for wal-mart back in 07. Just think it would be nice being the guy watching the unload instead of being the guy doing it like i did for a couple years.

PTL is a pretty good dry van company and the trucks have APU's. They do a lot of Texas runs.

That Walmart dedicated would be the best choice though.

I've been trying to get a hold of PTL but I can't seem to get through. They could have me back in a truck as early as next week so it would be nice to get back at it! It stinks just sitting around home. Any idea what their pay and hometime is like?

Just my two cents... I usually always hear decent things about US Xpress. Had a few friends work for them when they were starting out and all showed proof of good pay. You won't get home every week. I think about once a month, like most starting companies. I had only one friend work for Western and they hated them. Jerked them around with hometime, bad miles, crappy equipment. But, I wouldn't base an opinion just on one case. Hope that might help a bit. I'm not sure why companies are telling you that you're unhireable. Did you get terminated while under contract?

I appreciate any input, so thank you. There's a link to my other thread a few posts up that explains what happened. In a nutshell I mentioned on here that I was putting in a two week notice. My former employer saw it and terminated me. The reason other companies don't want to hire me is because I am not re-hireable and my lack of any real experience. Only had 3 weeks with a trainer. Money isn't everything to me, believe it or not I didn't get my cdl for the money. Even though it is nice getting good checks. I did this because it's the only thing I've wanted to do. As long as I can clear 400 a week after taxes I'd be content.

That was an ####### move on the company's part. :-/
Well, I work for Conway Truckload and I know we offer a program for brand new drivers. Can't say I know a whole lot about the program but it could be worth a shot. Great equipment, miles are great and they are good about hometime, even though they're not going to get you home every week.

I did put in an app with con-way but I haven't heard anything back. Western Express and P.T.L. have been making hard pushes to get me to come work for em. I'm just concerned about all the bad press on here about them. Ideally a nice weekly hometime regional gig would be nice. If it wasn't for the family I'd have no issues staying out for weeks. Keep trying to talk the wife into it but I just get the evil eye and I know better than to cross that lol! Well back to the phone calls , the hunt continues

I'd go the Schneider route, on the walmart dedicated. If this is something you really want to do, the better money is owner op. You could run your own truck with Schneider in as few as 6 months on their choice program.
