I have been looking into becoming a truck driver for some time now and I was wondering about schools. I was thinking of CR England only because its almost free I don't have much startup money but the thing I'm most worried about is the physical not the drug test because I know for sure I can pass it I don't do anything but with the physical I don't know if my sight is good enough I can see pretty far before it gets blurry but sometimes its tough one more thing I was planning on using food stamps for my food at the trucking school would this be possible if I live out of state?
Looking for some advice

Go to Walmart and get an eye test with the eye chart & make sure your glasses are OK.
Think about going to Prime Inc. This company will front some money to you for food, plus they pay you $600.00 a week while riding with a trainer.
Central Refrigerated is another good choice & they pay you $540.00 a week while riding with a trainer. You will need food money though.
CR England will work for you, if you don't get involved in the lease/purchase program.
Swift has a good CDL program, but you do need food money.
Stock up on Ramen noodles and cheap food like that before you leave. Where ever you go, there is free micro-wave and hot water.
Your EBT food stamp card ; ask if it will work in another state. It probably will, but ask.blairandgretchen, Chase05 and d o g Thank this. -
You have to remember, the eye test is probably one of the most important DOT test.....They don't want you killing anyone on the road. You can't stop a semi on a dime.Arizona..Fats Thanks this. -
Hello, Chinatown!
I live in New York city. About 3 yrs ago I passed through all the tests and finally got New York State CDL A. Actually, Nntill now I still have not yet got any over the road experience, but I would like very much to go in for transportation career. Now I just don't know what to do next step.
Should I take refresher course in a driving school ? or should I go to company- sponsored driving school? Is there any company- sponsored driving school near New York City? Or what company is the best you think , I can go there.
Thank you for your advice!Chinatown Thanks this. -
Maverick will hire you though without any formal training, if you're in the hiring area, and they will train you.
These companies have their own CDL school:
Prime Inc. - has flatbed/refrigerated/tanker(the CDL school is free if you work for them for approx. 12 months, plus they pay you $600.00 a week while you ride with a trainer)
Stevens Transport
Central Refrigerated - pay you $540.00 a week while riding with a trainer.
Swift
CRST
JBS Carriers - pays for you to attend Roadmasters then deducts the cost from your weekly pay & I think you have to pay it back within 12 months.
Driver Solutions : various companies pay for CDL school. May have something closer to NYC than the rest; ask them. (Google : Driver Solutions)
Look over these websites & choose the one you like best. The best annual pay is with flatbed or tanker. Just do what you have to do to get started. Best wishes.
Are you from Xiamen City in Fujian Province? My wife is from AnHui. -
Hi, Chinatown
I am so glad that you gave me such good trucking information and advice. I will do research on trucking companies before making decision. Thank you again!
I am from xiamen in Fujian Province. Have you been to xiamen? I saw your wife in the picture, she is from Anhui,so you must have been to Anhui. If you come to NYC, please let me know.Last edited: Aug 19, 2013

I learned a little lesson with my falling out with Prime for a week. Go to the private schools or call and ask if they have company prefinance options. TMC was going to put me through a school and this was all arranged by the school itself which also works with schnieder and some other mega companies. The way it worked with them is you give them all your info like you are doing a phone app (which technically you are) and then the school either approves you or not. If you are approved they send that app out to all the companies they work with and those companies in turn send employment offers back to the schools to offer you. With the school I talked to, MTC, you have to make a down payment which she said could be anywhere from $75 to $500 depending on the company and then you go straight to that company from school.
