In MO you can be on your own at 17 so no issue here.

It is a complete joke across the board. Remove your OOS sticker and kill 18 people and you will get less time than the story above!

Meanwhile, the random dude who was trying to protect innocent people on the subway gets charged with 2nd degree murder and $100,000 bond.
Seems like we're going in the wrong direction.

Hey man, I'm not advocating for that in the least. I'm only quoting what the article said. Did you read the whole thing?

No dude, not at all. You took my response in the wrong way. I never meant to imply that at all. Mostly it was just a bad joke.

The problem is your DUI is easily provable, sex crimes not so much. The defense can try to impugn the arresting officer, look for evidence missteps, etc but it's hard to get traction on those things. However the "What were you wearing?" line of questions is the fast lane to impeaching a sex crime victim. No prosecutor wants to get drawn into a morass that results in an "L" for them, especially when there is a potential for press coverage.

And all of this is before we get to the crimes that don't get reported because the victim is (rightly) afraid of reprisal. Or they do report but nothing is done.

    What have we come to?
Or, perhaps we've set the bar too high?

Because everyone wants to bring the race card.
He’ll be charged with a hate crime vs one of same race, regardless of being threatened and acting in self defense.

It's not what we've come to, it's where we've always been. The only difference is you hear about now. Or at least some of it, most of it doesn't hit the news.

I'd also argue it's not the height of bar that's the problem, but it's varying nature. Have money? The system treats you differently. Have position? The system treats you differently. Your case hits the news? The system treats you differently. Sometimes the accused gets treated better, sometimes worse - but it's still different based on factors that shouldn't come into play.
