I never drove a day OTR in my life. I have always been local with LTL and I started at 22 with experience driving a step van at fedex ground. Do not listen to anyone saying you have to go OTR. These local companies will give in and make exceptions. Example, Estes Express requires two years, when I applied I had 8 months and after a while they called me offering me the position but I was already at YRC. Even go to the rail yard or ports if you live close by some, some of the intermodel companies will hire as well, even construction sites
LTL job for 21 year old with no experience?

Just have to look hard enough guys. When it was getting real slow at my old terminal, I found a second job at New Penn Motor Express as a dockworker.

16 years!? What kind of local do you want -
It was so easy to get a trucking job post 2007. You could call anyone and they were begging for drivers. Now it's a whole different game. It's an employers market unless you want to work for a bottom feeder company. New laws every year make it harder for drivers to get a job. Your record has to be pretty much spotless. Almost seems to me that they are trying to destroy trucking all together. Every year they come out with more restrictions different rules and laws. It's a pain to keep up with it all. That CSA stuff seems to have really hurt a lot of people. Well I'm just glad to have a job especially with how they are destroying the country and our economy.

Best bet is to drive a concrete truck. OR a school bus. Both require a CDL and will have you home every night. Most school bus companies train you and you will take the cdl test in their bus. If you are comfortable driving a combination then you could take the cdl test in a truck from CDL help, just google them. I went through a local cdl mill in Dallas, International School of Truck Driving. I know there may be some grants available.

They, as with most of the training school offer job placement. I know, from attending, they do a lot with CRST. You could apply with CRST and get trained in Dallas. The best part with this option is CRST only has a 8 month commitment after school, unlike some of the others!
What ever you choose, good luck to you!RobertFord Thanks this.
