Good morning. I'm looking at coming over to Magnum but have a few questions.
1. I live I Rapid City, SD. Is that a good area for Magnum?
2. What is the health insurance like and how expensive?
3. Does Magnum do Another physical? Mine is still good for awhile yet.
4. Is it reasonable to expect to be out 25 days and home 6-7 days?
Thanks in advance for your answers! This thread has been very helpful.
Edit: Meant to say that I have almost 3 years experience but all in flatbed so would need a little training on how to operate the reefer unit and sliding tandems. Thanks!

As far as #3 and the edit I think if you have at least 6 months on your current physical, they'll take yours...I could be wrong. As for learning how to run a reefer, to use the Geico ad...so simple a cave man could do it. All of Magnums reefers are modern units, easy enough to figure out without much trouble. As for sliding tandems, all the Magnum trucks I saw, had a truck suspension pressure gauge, so once you determine what psi it takes to hold up 34k lbs, then you just adjust your trailer until it's under that pressure. That, and keep your tandems within the 41 foot bridge limit that some states enforce. All trailer are air release on the lock pins, so there is no fighting the pins to release as long as there isn't a mechanical issue.

Health Insurance, there are a variety of plans and price ranges to choose from. So depending on your needs, you can find one that suits you (or family).
When I came to Magnum I didn't have to take another physical, I had one that was close to expiration and another that was just done a few months prior and I was good.
Magnum is very flexible with hometime, they require 10 day notice and if it's an emergency just call and chat with dispatch.
I have only been here since January, so other drivers with longer experience may be better able to answer questions then I have.
As far as the reefer as @supersnackbar said it's very easy to operate.
Like I said before I have been here since January and I stay busy, the only reason I have had to sit was due to my error or a dispatch error and that's been very rare.
Hope I answered your questions and hope to see you on board.Truckermania Thanks this. -
Thank you Matt! Much appreciated.

Have one or two runs to Rapid City from Kalamazoo MI, otherwise not much that I can think of, or that I have gotten, anyway. LTD yard in town, so I don't think it'll be much trouble to get home.

Delivered to Everett WA this morning and one other truck was leaving as I docked...I like Sunday morning with no other trucks around! Was a Gaylord load ND I was out of there in an hour. Went to Pilot at Ferndale and of course, no parking so parked outside Bellingham Cold Storage. One if the guys was walking to another warehouse and I asked if I was good to park til tomorrow afternoon. Planned on getting a motel for the night and loading 1600 Mon. He says to wait a few minutes, comes back, has me check in and they are loading. I'll have just enough time to make it to Ellensburg then shutting down for a reset and down to Forest Park Ga for next Sunday at 1300. Will try to get another reset in Clarksville TN enroute. I'm tired! Hope everyone is running better...what's been the hangup?

Did get loaded today but took them time to get it picked and on the trailer so I made it to the TA at North Bend and taking reset here... Have 1:19 on 70 and picking up 2.75 Mon and not so good hours til Thur. Only run about 10,000mi but had alot of time between appt's earlier in the month. Will be starting Nov with a bang, though...and it's the first month of the trimester! Stop by if you're running through or wave (all your fingers) if you're not. I'm beat!

Depending on what you expect to make you should be ok, with that hometime you'll likely have a lot of 10K months which will mean you make less than $0.50 per mile.
For many flexible hometime is more important than absolute top $. Our insurance is on the pricy side, but again it all depends on the level of coverage you need.
Great company in many ways, lol if I were to leave it would be for open decks...keep in mind you will sit quite often as a reefer driver. Thankfully our trucks are nicely appointed and many of us have entertainment in them, and cooking gear - it makes a huge difference.
Running the reefer is a much simpler job than tarping lol.Truckermania Thanks this.
