Melton,Maverick,TMC, the big 3 starter flatbed trucking companies. I started out with Maverick, I feel all 3 have excellent paths for someone interested in Flatbed work to grow by learning proper securement, tarping etc. My next thought is each company has specific issues, Melton is pet friendly, runs all 48 and Canada, Maverick Flatbed runs primarily east of I-35 , except Glass division, they run all over and Canada, no pet policy. TMC, coast to coast, no pet policy. Depending on your home area, this could be crucial in making a proper choice. Starting Flatbed in Winter can be a true test for someone new. If your heart is into the work of Flatbedding, go for it.

They were on my shortlist right after I got out of school. Solid company, most drivers seem reasonably happy with them. But it is flat bed!

One more for flatbed right out of the gate here. I cut my teeth at Prime and on hindsight I wish I had gone to Melton or TMC. Stay away from Western Express, Prime, and Maverick. If you can do flatbed you can do van/Reefer with very little to no training but the same doesn't work the other way around. Good luck out there and remember that nobody remember the guy that took a little extra time but got it done safe but everybody remembers the guy who caused the damage.

Not that it really matters that much at this point, but....
in an earlier conversation, one of my coworkers said he used to drive for Melton (we both do hazmat tanker, now)--and he had very positive things to say about the company and his experiences there.
You will very likely see most (if not all) of the lower 48 states (and some Canada, even) with them.
Should be a good place to start, if flatbed is in fact a good "fit" for you....

I wanted to go Tanker at first but between being new and in South Florida the only one willing to train right out of school was schneider for their Jet Set Tanker division and the more I looked into the whole Jet life didn't seem appealing.....lol
Speed_Drums and stwik Thank this.
