All this talk of new inexperienced hands we have............This forum is great, remember to take it to the road.

I have been talking about Mercer past, but we live in the here and now.

When we are loading/unloading with Quality truck, new O/O or a guy new to flat bedding. Give them pointers, help them out. Look at their load and explain why this piece is going to walk around on them. etc...............

Not much you can do with a bad attitude either the new hand or the old hand.

These new hands find them self working for one of the best flat bed outfits in the country. We have a lot of experience to share, So when we see a Mercer hand having a hard time. Help him out

Even if it's as small as helping roll up tarps.

Well here's a good one, I had a issue this morning after unloading at hunter army airfield. On short runs of 250 miles or less. You can be put on hold and keep your unload time for board position, as an incentive to move those loads. Well signed up for three loads from Charles base to hunter army airfield starting this past Monday, then it gets pushed to start Tuesday, the the load and unload same becomes load and unload next day, then its down to only 2 loads, every day I am calling as asking about my hold time from Dec 17th, I was told from before and everyday this week it would be entered that way when I unloaded this morning, which is not how its normally done and makes impossible to preplan. Well I unload and am told I can't get my Dec 17th place for the board because the AGENT. won't allow it, I say well here's the deal, either I get it back or i am pulling the signs, I own the truck and trailer, I am heading the 50 miles home, if I ain't got an answer by the Time get home its done. I got my time back, but Im at home having

a come to Jesus meeting with myself. I was lied to, by the agent, this is honestly the first time I have felt this way. I am gonna call and see who runs the show here Louisville or the agents, depending on the answer , I won't leave now. But come spring i may be outta here after 5 years, there's way more to this but I hit the main gist.

I just ran some short military moves with 20 some odd trucks. 5 of the quality guys, no complaints, nice folks and willing to learn , we all helped each other. Most folks forget that butt hole can drive any truck in the world, they don't just drive lease trucks.

I thought Louisville held the board position and nothing to do with an agent. I agree with you and I hope it gets straight.

Mtoo, we all sometimes forget, that we all started out pulling our first load, new and green. If ya knew how i started you would be amazed, I have never went to a driving school, and when I got my trucking I CV sense , in Georgia all ya had to do was get someone who was a licensed truckdriver to sign an affidavit that you knew how to drive, I did and I was ready to roll, when I took my road test, I had never actually hooked to a flatbed with a fifth wheel, my very first load was double stack roll roofing from savannah to Baltimore Maryland, and I did what it took for a recently discharged soldier needed to do to put food on the table. I lied like a dog

Until we started the lease with the company we are with until Monday, hubby had never run a business of his own, despite spending *mumblety-mumble* years in the auto repair industry (and in the Army before that.) What he does have is a serious case of work ethic. I *have* run a business before, that was closed due to a downturn in the economy. (One of the first things people stop doing is fru-fru stuff for their dogs when the money stops rolling and I was a dog groomer.) And to be honest, between the kids (who were brand spanky new at the time) and the carpal tunnel I developed while grooming, I was pretty well done. (I didn't mind the animals. The owners are a different story.) We've been leasing for 3 1/2 years, and have some inklings on how this all works.

Freight slows down. Yep. But, I do know how to make the business end work. And that's why our marriage and business work. We have different assets that complement each other. Yes, we are getting a Quality truck. Yes, we are leasing a van. BUT, the rates at Mercer are far superior to the per mile rate we are currently getting and we have made money here. I believe with all my brain power that we will succeed. Learning curve? Sure. Somethings will be easier...like looking for the cheapest fuel and not worry about how much IFTA will be yanked out of the settlement come end of quarter. I'll be studying the boards and learning everything I can. See you on the 18th.

(Please please pray to the Overlord Murphy that the windshield guy will be here tomorrow and able to replace my pickup's windshield. There was a minor problem that put my hood into my windshield on Tuesday. (The hood latch failed.) I'm fine, kid is fine. Truck is (mostly) fine.

Agents tend to just dispatch the load and not code it correctly at time of dispatch. It is ALWAYS best to have your coordinator handle these loads and remind him of the short haul and to hold your position. Once the load is dispatched it is my understanding it can not be changed to hold your position if it was not entered at time of dispatch. It is something most coordinators have problem with frequently, that agents do not do this correctly.
