I need to get to that point lol, I don't want a big ol house truck, but I'll take owning more land and actually getting to do stuff with the land anyday.

LOL. That just reminded me, the last two weeks at my last company I drove like 7300 miles (don't remember the exact number but I posted it here last year). Now I did that because I knew it would be a couple of weeks before I saw any money from Mercer (well I thought I knew, really didn't believe I would be getting my money 24 hrs after delivery). Anyway I have 9k on the new truck and I've had it almost 2 months now. To say I've been Mercerized might be an understatement.

Roughly how long would you say it took you to get used to talking with agents/brokers and figuring out Mercer lanes?

TBH at first I didn't know agents were calling me. I thought some of them were fill ins for my coordinator. Once I realized WHO I was talking to it became easy as I could just tell them what I was looking to do and they would make it happen.

As for the Mercer lanes? I'm still learning those, they seem to migrate a little every few weeks. What I had to learn was that they move and I need to be willing to move with them. One of the biggest things I hear when I talk to other drivers is how they where having great luck working one area and then it seems to dry up. When I ask why they are still trying to work that area the normal response is that it was so good they just know it will come back. Meanwhile I mossy on down the road to the next area and keep going. Well maybe that is what I learned about Mercer lanes, you have to be willing to move with them.

Cj pretty much nailed it. Good paying freight lanes change all the time. You gotta be willing to put in the effort to find what's hot next week, go work it while finding out whats gonna be hot the following week, and so on. It's a revolving market. If you don't evolve with it, the only thing that will happen is you will be stuck in a cycle of cheap freight.

The more a person is willing to change what they do and where they do it, the more successful they will be.

Well, my husband learned to listen to his wife today. He's made two mistakes now, (but he NOW understands about daily rate PLUS all the other stuff.) But he is pre-planned out to next weekend.
