Right, as I said it should come out the same in the end. However, as hard as this may be for some to believe, I've heard of drivers having a hard time to scrape up a couple hundred in cash! Of course, they didn't work for Mercer .....

It seems there is confusion over iota taxes. There are statements about wholesale prices, when I the correct term is pre tax price. You take the price subtract the fuel tax for the state and compare pretax price. Look on the fuel price site for mercer , the third column is the price without state tax, not much use for many of us, but helpful for those paying there own ifta. Its not luck at all. If you overbuy in one state with cheaper fuel tax, and run the majority of miles in a higher tax state, you will owe money. How many of you know you that if you have a fuel tax credit at mercer its applied to next years tag? Its not luck, if you know how to work the numbers. There's a method, you have know whether paying some in or getting a credit , saves your overall cost. Ifta made it easier, there was a time when you a report for each state. I have gotten a credit 4 out of the 5 years here at mercer, mainly because of how I bought fuel in certain states, Fl vs Ga for example, but Ga raised its fuel tax, so the difference has been greatly reduced. But roshea is dead on, there is a way to do it.

yeah, I forgot about the credit going toward the tag, thanks for that reminder. It eases the burden of a larger payment in a way you barely notice.

No. You end up over paying for fuel. You are gonna pay the tax regardless. You can either pay it when you fuel or when you file. But it's still getting paid.

The most cost effective way is to know what the fuel tax is in each state. ..subtract that from the pump price (or your discounted price if you have one) and you ate left with the true fuel cost before taxes enter the equation.

To give an example...i would always fuel in Florida, everyone else would fuel just over the line on Georgia cause the pump price would be 8 to 10 cpg cheaper. Florida had a fuel tax of 29.5 cpg. Georgia was only 11 cpg. A sustenance of 18.5 cpg. So my florida fuel was actualy 8 to 10 cpg cheaper than georgia.

If your not purchasing fuel at the cheapest possible "pre tax price" you're over paying for fuel. There is no magic formula that will get anyone out of paying IFTA. This doesn't apply here at Mercer because we don't pay IFTA.

If the pre tax price is the same, then yes you can buy in the higher taxed state and use IFTA as a savings account.

Yea I agree. But I don't even go that far up. First time I ever went that way an spent a car note in tolls I decided from that day forward i would never come back. Lol

I go there often. But only when the rate justifies it. 2900$$ out of huntington, wv? I'm on my way. Pre elog that was a 2200 dollar day after fuel and tolls in and out. In fact, more than once I'd bounce all the way back to get another one. Three round trips in a week and i had 6600 after daily operating expenses. The only thing bad about it was the day spent putting new shocks all the way around after that run was up. Man that bridge is rough.
