So the ones of us still here, who are happy don't matter? You choose to put more importance 9on a few who have to have some justification on why they left. Its odd some of us are quite happy, and weekends aren't meant for home, I can't get crap done in a weekend, I prefer to stay out and take mine at 7 to 10 days off, that's the deal here, you do what you want.

Hey Skateboardman, I understand MI38 wanting to get as many opinions as possible. Nobody wants to pick the wrong company and then have to move on.
That's the problem when looking for a company. So many different opinions.
And ,no , happy people don't matter. I wanna hear some beachin' and despair.

Btw , I'm down with the 7-10 days off. That's the way I did it. A weekend means I got some sleep and mowed the grass.

Oh, yeah, I wasn't saying I want the weekends at home, I was saying that's the way the flatbed side of the industry seems to be set up. I like running a few weeks and taking a week off. Then taking the weekend off out on the road to visit people and places.

As a conestoga hauler myself I can tell you that grossing $15k a month is easy. But as I've said before, you will have to do a little more leg work then most of the flat guys here want to do. Don't expect to see a lot of loads for us on the board. There are few of us here so you have to hustle a bit at first.

As for downtime? I don't experience a lot of it but on occasion I'll sit a day or two for a real good load. Some markets are easier than others. Ohio and steel coils can be run 24/7 if you like. I personally don't care for coils. They are heavy. But many don't care about weight and that's fine.

As stated in previous post, you will kinda have to find your own little niche. I really can't comment too much on being able to run hard as I've gotten out of that mindset. I drank the Kool-Aid and it tends to make me lazy.

I wish you the best of luck either here or wherever you decide to call home. Take your time deciding as I'm sure you don't want to have to go through this again in 6 months.

@mi38 I will give you my opinion from my experience. You got 20 years with a clean record and work hard. I had 27 with Mercer, clean record and worked hard. You should have no problem grossing $15000 a month. The biggest down fall is coming here swimming in debt and thinking your going to start making money on day one.

Do a little search. I started a thread a couple of years ago " Why do some fail @ Mercer" it's a good read.

My opinion of Mercer past is they were by far the best flat bed company in the country. They hired only the very best successful owner operators that owned both truck and trailer. These successful owner operators had years of flatbed experience before they signed on and the equipment they were signing on was good looking and in great shape. All Mercer wanted from us was 100% honesty and in return they gave us the same.

Because of the quality of the owner operators and their equipment; Mercer agents around the country sold quality and experience and we got some very good rates in return.

Let's fast forward forward to Mercer of today. Mercer is still a very good company. Mercer in Louisville is still a very honest company and they expect the same from you.

It is very hard for the agents of today to demand high rates because for the most part all we have is average drivers with perhaps very little flatbed experience and average looking equipment.

There is a learning curve @ Mercer, just being a hard runner just doesn't cut it anymore, you have to figure out how to run smart.

In the old days, very seldom would you run across someone who would bad mouth Mercer. Today there are hundreds if not thousands.

Mercer has a bunch of average drivers, This is what the successful guys on this board have figured out. There is lots of room for above average

So @mi38 if you can take time to adapt to a learning curve be smarter than average and nimble on your feet, Mercer is still a very good company.

I have not really gone back to work yet. My first load is Friday. Weekend run to get me back west. My girl had never spent any time in Memphis so we are spending a few nights on Beale St. I did pick my truck up from the shop on Monday but we were not done with our mini vacation.
