I'm calling recruiting Monday & I will do my best to listen to what they say & not what I want/don't want to hear.

My area, OKC, is horrible where I'm at now. I'm not even going to tell you what I usually pull to get out of the house. You guys would laugh me right off the net. Lol. From a few discussions I've had with the expert pricks here I can do much better at Mercer getting in & out of the house. I know it's not the best place, but York in Norman is 2 miles from my house.

I guess it doesn't matter where you live, You have to learn how to adapt cause this industry is always changing. be smart and learn from your mistakes, the successful ones keep tweeking their operation. I would say you need a little bit of good luck

But I'm not sure there is any good luck in being an owner operator, just a lot of learning tweeking and getting smarter from all the bad luck that comes our way every day. So be safe smart and profitable. (and grab whatever good luck comes your way)

Plan for the worst, that way you arrive safe

I've already had to learn one company's freight lanes & dead areas. I think I can take that experience & combine it with some guidance & learn another company's lanes & markets. I did real good here right off the bat, actually surprised my buddy that brought me here. He couldn't believe the way we picked up the system & took off. Now with that being said I don't just expect to come over to Mercer & be knocking it out of the park from the get go. Just saying, IMHO, I might have a little advantage over the situation compared to if I'd never have booked my own freight before. Maybe not, idk. Lol.

Its not bad there. Norman is moving AC units. I went DH from Tulsa to Prescott Ar. I m in Prescott now. I just wanted to get a load first thing on Monday, I'm scheduled for 730 am to Dayton beach. The hazmat helps getting roofing supplies.

Does Mercer require hazmat to lease on like landstar does? I let mine go about 4 years ago.

I don't know, I told him flat was better. He knows some one who has dedicated runs from NM that will get him home every other weekend, so he is going to lease there. He said Mercer wouldn't get him a flat for a month or longer. I asked him if he could buy one. but it really doesn't matter

Honestly FB is great in the Mid west. I'm out of jersey, if I had a step it would better. I can get home to Jersey its just hard to leave.

Midwest seems to be the best all around. Lol. I leave Oklahoma & go to the Midwest & run for a week or two then head back home.

Does it pay good enough to have it? I know here they said it works in orientation but looking at the loads on the board there isn't any way I'm going to haul hazmat for the rates I've seen.

Pay its a little more. Its the ability to get out with it. I DH 178 miles about half the time to get out of jersey. I go to Pennsylvania for a hazmat load. it pays 2 a mile typically, if its short it will be more.

For me haz mat was like lumber tarps. I did not use either one unless it was a benefit for me. It might be the load home, it might be the load friday instead of sitting all weekend. lots of reasons to have it.
