Why not? If you don't run mercer truck plates you pay ifta. Run mercer plates you don't pay ifta. Mercer will also title the truck for you that cost around $100

You can have your own plate. But you have to provide a copy of the lease to the state. Mercer won't sign the lease till you get to orientation. At this point you are caught in a catch 22. Honestly as a new truck prefer you should just get mercers plate. While I'm not suggesting mercer is the greatest thing on earth, for a guy with limited business experience you will be very hard pressed to find anywhere better. A couple years down the road once you have more first hand experience owning and running a truck, and more importantly, familiar with freight lanes, then get your own plate to make the reconstruction away easier. Also worst case scenario is you are out a few hundred bucks. Plates are prorated over the course of the year, and mercer will refund the prorated amount when you return the plate if leave.

i am actually buying a truck from a friend. My payment is only going to be around $200 a week. I am going into the dry van division. Due to health issues I cannot do flatbed. Can you tell me an average of what dry van division makes per mile? Also, where is the best routes to run for dry van? I'm not interested in going to the northeast because of tolls and fuel. This is not my first rodeo with owning a truck. Just wondering if you can provide me with a little info on dry van. Going to be starting this month if everything goes as planned.

Your payment is about the same as mine so you'll be good there. Average van rates are $1.35-$1.40 a mile. That's the company average. Most weeks I do better than that. Actually the only time I don't do better than that is if I'm trying to get to a particular area cause I'll just take whatever load gets me there. For instance this past week I took a load from NC to Texas for $1.36 a mile (including my dead head) because I was going home & I usually have to get to Texas to get home. On the way there were got news a family member passed away in NY. So instead of going home I grabbed the only load I saw going straight to NY & it paid $1.38 a mile including my dead head. So my average won't be that good but I still made plenty of profit & I got to where I needed to be.

As far as areas to run, stay east of I-35. The best areas are between the Carolinas & the Midwest. I run upstate NY quite a bit but I don't mind the tolls. They aren't that high & I don't run them a lot. Also fuel up here isn't much higher than Ohio. I won't buy fuel in Indiana or Pennsylvania at all.

Use your coordinator as a tool. Even when they call to offer you a load, all them if it's a good area it's going to. Ask them how many trucks are going to that area to reload. Etc... Also, when you see a load you like on the board call your coordinator & ask if they think it's a good load or ask about the area it goes. Lean on their experience until you know the areas good.

Per mile rate isnt as useful a number as it seems but its usually all we have for comparison when we come on here. All the guys i talked to told me that but didnt really understand until id been here a few months. Im usually above the average rstewart mentioned and jan was my best month so far. 1.67 on all odometer miles for the month. Fuel costs were highest so far too.
