Your roi statement would be incorrect for most people.

Just using $3 per gallon, 4 hrs day and 225 days a year totals $2700 per year in fuel. Most people will idle more than that so costs go up. My apu will use about a gallon in an average 10 hr break. I'll call it better than break even with the additional wear and tear and maintenance on my main money maker.

I also don't have to get up in the middle of my break to start or shut down the engine. I paid $9200 for my apu about 3 years ago. It's close to paid for in fuel savings alone just based on these numbers, but based on my actual usage, it's probably all ready paid for itself.

 

And that is just the direct cost of fuel saved, although it needs to be adjusted for what the APU uses to tell what the savings truly is. However the one thing I never see mentioned is this: the fuel wasted idling has a cost far higher than what you paid for it. To use your example which is 900 gallons, you could have driven 900 GL x (at least) 6mpg or 5400 miles. Those miles if you are loaded 80% of them would be 4320 revenue miles at let's say $2 per mile, or 8640 in revenue. So now you have wasted 900 gallons of fuel which you paid $3/GL for or $2700. You could have had $8640 in revenue for that amount of wasted fuel. And there is wear on the engine although so many people dispute that for some reason.

So just adding in that one factor changes the perspective on how much it costs to idle. Considering most people will idle much more than your very conservative estimate it is easy to see how an APU even at $11-13K is easily paid for in a year.
