In the old days septic tanks didn't have to be on record with the county. You dug your own, hooked into it, and all was good.

To find it, look under the house and see which way the drain pipe is going through the wall. The septic tank will probably be within 20 to 30 feet of where it exits through the wall.

I just found the septic tank to my two business buildings I've owner for 26 years. I was doing some upgrading to the grounds and parking area, and the backhoe dug into it. Was never on any paper anywhere, and the previous owner didn't know where it was either. Luckily $600.00 fixed the problem, and I now know where it is.

On my previous house, the older previous owner thought he put it at a different place than it turned out to be. After digging holes all around where he said, I traced the drain pipe from the basement. He had built a garage on top of the tank. Luckily there was a small corner sticking out to where I could get into it to pump it out.

After I told him where I found it, he came over and looked early the next morning. I walked upon him shaking his head and mumbling to himself that surely he wasn't stupid enough to build a garage on top of the septic tank.

The easiest way to fibs a septic tank is walk the yard with a stiff 1/4 inch steel wire. Poke holes about every 2 feet going down a foot.
