You don’t have to pull cam cover from the rear to change bull gear on the 12.7. I’m willing to bet the two dealers are working together to cover the cost of taking your oil pan off to make sure it’s permatexed properly so it don’t leak. You may want to go to the dealer it’s at now to be sure that’s were it’s really leaking from. I don’t trust anyone working on my stuff even if I personally know them because I been dealt a bad hand way to many times

No you don't have to but if you don't its a high risk of cracking it when you remove the cam gear.

Didn't Detroit even make a support piece later on to help brace the cover?

Only high risk about it is the mechanic doing the job reinstalling gears. Most of the mechanics I’m around are 50+ years old and know how to do it right.
Just saying if it were my truck my butt would be down at that dealer making dang sure it’s the cam cover and not something the other dealer did. Dealers may not be affiliated but they will converse with each other to keep from doing rework for free

I would call Detroit and ask what the factory procedure is, if they say pull the rear cover then you might have some ammo to argue with.

They didnt pull just the bull gear, they pulled ALL the gears, cam gear included which is why i say they hit the rear cover

I'm sure they tested out the engine and checked for leaks after the repair. I would think they saw the leak, washed the engine, and figured you would find it in another state so they could get out of paying for a repair.

I used to work for a Freightliner dealership many years ago. Mechanics will go a long way to cover up their screw-ups from management and the truck owner.

Years later a freind of mine took his truck in to the dealership to have new fuel lines ran as his were coming apart. When we went to pick up the truck there was a noticeable miss at startup and some white smoke. Air being sucked into the fuel lines. After we insisted there was a problem they worked on it a few more days.

Fast forward, over the next few weeks that truck was in three different Detroit houses and two Freightliner dealerships replacing injectors that were gaulded and repairing connections on badly made up fuel lines. The problem finally turned out the original dealership had cross threaded where the main fuel line connected to the fuel tank, causing the fuel system to suck air.

With a lot of loud b-tching, which my friend was not afraid to do, the original Freightliner dealership paid for all the repairs to get it right.

For the front gear cover they did. But for the back cam cover? Its just a small 4 inch or so diameter cover.
