Some companies will reimburse the tuition back to you in monthly installments. Try to attend a school that's 160 hrs. because that gives you more options at graduation.
Lots of decent companies hire new cdl graduates in Virginia.
    Abilene Motor Express - Richmond,VA
Freymiller - coast to coast refrigerated.
Magnum Ltd. - OTR refrigerated/runs most states.
United Parcel Service - line haul & truckload. Must apply online only. Pay is $ .7042 cents per mile.
Melton Truck Lines - coast to coast flatbed.
Tyson Foods - refrigerated. Avg. pay about $65K per year.
Senn Freight Lines - coast to coast flatbed.

From past experience i've found that anyone with any kind of military past will have no problem getting a company to sign them on so its a real buffet for you just take your time and choose the right one if you have the cash to spare between $4000 - $6000 you could choose your own training facitity othewise go with a company sponsored course if you can't afford it.

A preventable will be enough to get you dismissed, ie Fired. Enough preventables will prevent you from being hireable. A preventable is defined as hitting something you should not have hit. Usually a post, wall, building, pole etc.

No company will "Take care of you" drivers are a dime a dozen, replaceable by any few dozens of hungry potential hires every week in orientation.

My spouse was a marine with service connected, she worked for the Federal Govt at one time and managed to escape into trucking with me when they were fixing to make her a GS7 and beyond with two to three hour lunches that bothered her Ethically. We paid cold cash for our trucking school for her, about 3000 dollars done. Paid off in about 6 weeks flat. I made money hand over fist training her so that tuition bill vanished right quick.

Schooling will teach you to pass the state CDL test but the real education will be bought in battle your first year or three out there with blood, sweat and tears. Ive lived a life time around trucks and I can tell you I am still learning every day.

Thank you to everyone for all the info and encouragement. I'm thinking that I will pay out of pocket and attend a local CDL school near me. I like the idea of being able to have my pick of what company I go to and not being tied to or owing a company for a year.
Now it's just study, study, study and then take the basic knowledge and airbrakes test next week to get my CDLP so I can start a school.

First day of cdl school, submit job applications & the more the better. You'll receive job offers contingent upon completing cdl school and having any required endorsements. Don't wait until graduation to submit job applications, do them the first day or first week of school.

There's also an app, "DMV Genie CDL Permit Practice Tests App" for each state. Google for that.
