Oddest combo for me with a dry van has been. . Guns and propane. . I still laugh when I remember the expression on the mans face at the Cali ag station when I told him what I was hauling.

Ol'hand, was wanting to pick your brain a second. I know this is an old thread but it kind of goes along with a load I just did. Picked up a load of onions, lemons, lettuce, and strawberries. multiple picks for one customer. I had temp ranges from 32 to 50. I set the unit at 34 continuous and rolled, but I was a lil nervous. got to customer, unloaded and no problems. I just picked up another load for the same customer, was straight load of onions. On bills said maintain 42, but also said to open rear vent. asked broker and he said keep vent closed. Question is why would they want to keep a vent open, but also maintain a constant temp? Got load delivered with no problems but asking for future reference. Been pulling an ice box for a while now, but try to learn more.

Onions need a lot of ventilation. A few places say to leave the vent open and some not. Fortunately onions are pretty safe to haul and unless you freeze them or give them no ventilation you're probably going to be fine.. I had a load like the first one you described, 7 picks, everything from potatoes to strawberries, I made the broker send me an e-mail confirming they wanted the load run at 38 because I was worried about the berries but everything ended up fine on mine too.

I don't recall where I picked them up, but a year or so ago I loaded tomatoes and the shipper wanted the rear doors opened once a day for at least 5 minutes. Never had the before and haven't had that since.
