Up till now, I’ve used either of our old iPhones as a dedicated, in a dumb holder , driver facing ELD .

The current one is an iPhone 7 - and Motive now says as of November 20,2025 - it’s dumb app won’t work with less than iOS 16 - which the phone can no longer update to.

I have a iPhone 14, and do not want to upgrade.

What is the dirt cheapest option for a phone solely used for the above purpose?

Manufactured Obsolescence. I miss paper logs, they were a lot cheaper.

Might it not be more financially prudent to get a different ELD instead of a different phone? Having two phones is a pain.

I’m leased to LS, so it’s either Qualcomm or Motive (formerly Keep Trucking). Either way I’m paying $28/month for the ‘hotspot’ black box - connection.

I’ve already done the Qualcomm dance - they obsoleted expensive equipment - so I’m not hacking into my wiring and buying their overpriced junk hardware.

The driver facing ELD needs only be a cheap phone that connects to the black box? Doesn’t need a carrier subscription/phone number.

If you have the motive black box already then you would just need a driver facing motive camera, they just plug into the black box.
I have one but it's only forward facing, not driver facing.

What about an android option? Plenty of cheap ones available.
Just has to do Bluetooth, correct?

It connects via WiFi I believe. Do all the cheap phones have WiFi capabilities?

Ive been running a dedicated galaxy a7 lite tablet for motive for a couple years. Its a cheap piece of crap but works perfectly for what I need it to do. I bet you can find a new one for under $150

I've found it better to run Motive off of Galaxy Tablet oppose to my phone. Especially if a Tooper pulls me over they only going through my tablet intead of my personal phone as well.
