I don't know if anyone can zoom in on this photo, but it's one I took several years ago while traveling eastbound on I-80 in Wyoming.

The driver of the tanker doubles zoomed by me at about 80 mph as I was cruising 62 mph. Ten minutes later, this is the carnage I and others had to navigate.

What I allege happened was that the tanker doubles driver attempted to pass the tractor trailer on the right with the big indentation in its rear, was blocked on his left, then needed to sharply return to the right lane, ending up smacking the rear end of the white trailer.

But I don't know for sure, as I did not witness the strike.

The moral of the story is that even if you're the big, bad wolf driving a large vehicle at high speed, you're still not going to huff and puff enough to do well against the rear of a semi trailer.

Probably the best decision out of all of this.

so our OP was tailing the Crete TT too closely to see the disabled vehicle on the shoulder. The Crete TT moved over from the right to the middle to give way for the disabled TT. The OP then traveling too fast for the conditions hit their brakes moved ALL the way over to the right shoulder, not just the right lane that the Crete TT had just vacated. But it is the Crete driver's fault?

Yeah, LEO is gonna look at him and laugh. You as the driver are supposed to maintain control of your vehicle and watch for other vehicles. So OP take your lumps for being a bad driver who was in too much of a hurry to drive safely and allow for safe following distances. The accident isn't Crete's fault it is your's.

    Hmmm, can't edit it now.
    Just a typo.

Just remember, proper clearance is 2/3rds a Sigourney or 3/4 a Bill Murray in metric.

It's gotten to the point where I expect the pudding head who was previously content to ride behind me, suddenly attempt to pass on right when I move into left lane to give someone on the shoulder some room.

Exactly. That's why I pull on the 4 ways and only pull to the left enough to straddle the dotted line. This way there isn't enough room for them to get by. Never take both eyes off the mirrors though. Constant scanning.
