I am considering moving, and was wondering what all is involved with transferring your CDL from one state to another...
To be more specific it would be moving from Minnesota to either Iowa, Wisconsin, or Illinois....
Is it a simple process of filling out paperwork and fees?
Or do you have to do everything all over again? (Road tests, written tests, etc?)
Do the rules vary from State to state?
Moving to a different state and transferring CDL?

yes it was for me, paperwork and fee when you have your pic taken in the new state, turn in your cdl.
-
each state may have their own policy
you'll have to check -
Check illinois. They have you redo everything, last I heard.

From what the people have posted from the same question past. Depends on the state sounds like.

Illinois is the worst state to transfer a cdl to. They flunk experienced drivers over simple things such as using the word "guage" instead of "indicator" and dozens of other reasons.
WI or MN would by my choices in your situation.CrappieJunkie Thanks this. -
This is correct. In Illinois you have to do everything all over from Permit, written tests, backing, pretrip, and driving.
I don't know why anyone would want to move here anyways. I'm moving out in a few months. High taxes, high crime. No thanksBUMBACLADWAR, Florida Playboy, Swedish Chef and 3 others Thank this. -
Yes, in Illinois you have to do everything over, written, skills, road test, I supposedly had one of the meanest people at the dmv, I guess I had the habit of touching things I was pointing too during my pre trip inspection and she got all mad about it, saying I was getting dirty for no reason lol, but anyway, each state is different on their policy about transferring a cdl from a different state, just call the dmv and ask them what you need to do.

Do not forget to Self-Certify in the new state with the DMV

Yep, pretty much have to start all over. Some say no, they were shuffled right in. I was thinking of moving from Wis. to Cal. and they ( Cal. DOT) told me, I have to surrender my CDL, and start over. Naturally, I told them to cram it with walnuts, most states make you start over. There's no money in "grandfathering" you in.
