I have already posted this in another thread, but this one seems to be a better fit. My father started driving (legally) in 1958 and was forced to retire in 2009 due to health and age. He has seen and been a part of many, many things in his life and during the times on the road. He was mostly a long haul driver. Out for weeks, home for hours or days. I used to go with him on trips and asked him one day why he did it. He told me "Son, I never met my father. He died when I was 8 months old in a car accident with two trucks. My mother always told me that he was a truck driver. And from my youth, I knew I was going to pick up where he left off and I promised him 50 years of driving"...... He made it. I surprised him on day a few months back and had located the newspaper artical from May 1941, that documented his father death. It also included a picture of the accident which, really didnt seem appropriate to give someone, but i knew he would appreciate it. He did. His father was killed on a road called Three Legged Hill. Two trucks hauling furniture were headed down, his father and a hitchhiker were headed up. The first truck crossed the line and hit the car which sent it into the path of the second truck, unable to stop in time. Now he has proof of what happened and not just word of mouth. Although it took many years to get it.
Over the many driving years he has written poems that tell stories and describe his life both personally and as a driver. Thousands and thousands of poems and he loves to share them. What is the reason behind this thread?
Well, on the facebook site, I have started a page for him. This page is for his poems. He writes them to share, and what better way to do it then online where people can read them and enjoy what he has said. The page is called "Highway Memories". The poems are located under the discussion tab on the page. I have only been able to get about 24 on there right now. But if your interested, get on over the "Highway Memories", read whats on there, and if you have one of your own, or a story youd like to share, post it. The page was just started on Saturday, so It will take some time to get it going.
But this is a way for many of the big truck drivers to kick back and reminisce about life on the road. My father is still heartbroken that he isnt driving. He has said more than once, he only wants one more trip. Just one more. Will, he get it? Probably not. But reading his poems will make you feel like your riding shotgun in his old Diamond T as he learns to drive, or coming down Donner Pass in a rain storm, or sitting at the table with him at an old truck stop that is gone away, watching the people around you and even hiding with him in his memories of his childhood.
Thanks for reading this. Like I said, its a new page and we are trying to get stuff posted quickly. But, he loves to share his stories. If your interested. Come and share some of yours. Thanks. God Bless and BE SAFE!!!! ROLL ON 18 WHEELER!
