    Hey everyone,

I do not have a CDL yet and am looking for some advice. My friend is in trucking school at Napier right now. He said I should go through the school to eventually drive doubles with him long-haul. He seemed to think he would be making 60K+ after the first year and half. Did he get sold a line of BS from the school? Also how does driving doubles work? Do you split the money out of one paycheck? How do you become someones partner, do you apply at the same company together? Any help would be great. I am looking at getting out of my cubicle prison and believe I could handle the trucker lifestyle.
    Thanks,

    Patrick

That's "team" driving. ("Doubles" are pulling two trailers at once.)

A good team with a good company can, indeed, make that kind of money within two years.

Click on my user name, then click on 'blog' if you want a run down on team doubles at ODFL. You split the miles, so 60 cent s per mile while he drives is 30 to him, and 30 to you while you sleep, and vice versa.

Or split the pay. Either way it is the same equation. 6000 miles times 60cents is $3600, you each take $1800.

Which company is he suggesting, and what area are you?

You mean team driving not doubles, doubles is two trailers.
I'd suggest not doing this, for one you have to really trust the other driver if you are going to sleep while he drives and there's no way I would do that with a rookie just out of school behind the wheel.
Then there is living together in such a confined space, not everyone can handle that and you could ruin a good friendship trying it but that would have to be your call.
It takes the right type of people to be able to drive as a team, not something I could ever do that's for sure.
Last, while you probably could make that much money after a while you would have no life outside of driving to do it.
Months on the road with very few days home isn't easy even for solo drivers, again it takes the right kind of person.
Your friend if he's just in school probably has no clue what he's getting himself into especially if he's thinking team driving.
    Just my 2cts.

Thanks, yes team driving is what I am talking about, total noob here. He is still in school and I am thinking about getting my CDL right now, so no company in mind. I don't know if he talked to his school and they told him that or if he is talking in more general terms.

    Blairandgretchen,

Just read your blog post, that sounds pretty awesome. We are in the Cincinnati area, I am closer to Columbus and my friend is just over the river in Kentucky. So does your company have a payroll dept or do you have to do your own taxes and stuff? I assume they take care of that for you. Do you know if there are any terminals in our area?

    Thanks,

    Patrick

They pay us as employees, on a W2, and withhold all relevant taxes.
Cincinnati and Columbus have Odfl terminals.

    2 cents a MILE? THAT'S slave wages.... :D :D :D

... to the OP, indeed after a year or two a team can make good money as long as you are with a company that does a LOT of "drop and hooks". If you are a team and they have a high percentage of live loads or live unloads, then it really reduces the number of miles you can drive as a team. I would never team with a company that has less than 80% drop and hooks.

Regarding the issues of team driving and general health and sanity, just make sure that you start out with respect for each other. Agree on some ground rules for general cleanliness and hygiene, where everything belongs, and how you split up your driving time. I drove for years with my brother in team situations and we got along great. We split the day noon to midnight and midnight to noon. It didn't matter who got the most miles in a particular shift, it just worked out better for having steady sleep schedules.

You need to trust your partner with your life. It's best if he/she has a "featherfoot" in heavy traffic, doesn't have to stand on the brakes a lot, and knows enough to get out of the lane with all the potholes while you are trying to sleep.

You will be trading your cubicle prison, for a rolling prison. This is only my perspective, you might like it.
